It can be dangerous and the only safe way to go about it is to make sure that no one (animals as well) is in front of you for the usual 300yards. Also, pay attention to buildings (glass) and farm equipment. With lead pellets, the splash back (distance straight back to The firing point from the pellet strike) safety distance is 10 yards so try to avoid very short ranges. pat g
Hi there, any projectile that is travelling at high velocity has the potential to ricochet. Have you thought about using a 410 for rat shooting? Many people do and it may be a little kinder to the surroundings than the 12gauge is. Bear in mind though that you will not eliminate the risk of ricochet's if you did decide to use a 410. Safe shooting . ATB Pat
bakerboy
While you are mulling over what to do, try safety glasses , the eyes do not repair themselves like the rest of the body , which is probably covered with clothing anyway . But I would suggest a .410 or a 9mm, but you will still get the richochets , so I go back to using the safety glasses .

Oxon88
a 12g is possibly a little excessive for rats. I would advise getting yourself a .410. or have you possibly considered an air rifle?
Scully
Ricochets are going to be a BIB BIG factor if lead is banned. We do a lot of bolting rabbits to guns, and ricochets haven't been a problem, but I dare say it would be an entirely different matter with steel.Manufacturers of shooting/safety glasses will benefit,if no-one else. Breastman
For Practical Shotgun a safety distance of 5 metres is used and we're shooting full-poke 28-36g #7.5/6/5 and i've never been hurt by pellets coming back from the steel plates, although it does sting if it hits you in the face, especially on the teeth Saftey/shooting glasses are essential Mark
vulpicide
Safety glasses are a must for what you are doing as a friend of mine lost an eye in a shooting accident involving a ricochet a 410 or an air rifle would be a better option but you need the glasses some of the clay shooters will put you on the right track regarding type and price.
