HDAV
Just got back from a weekend in Jersey where i managed to wangle an hour to go to http://www.jerseypistolclub.org.je/ and have a go at shooting a pistol, the pistol was marked as .22LR now i am used to 12 Gauges but the round was tiny! smaller than a .22 air pellet? I couldn't get over how small it was and fiddly to load the magazine. I saw but wasn't able to shoot a .38 revolver but was astounded by how small the .22LR shells were both in length and girth are these the same as the ones used to Target rifles and rabbits? or are the pistol ones smaller and being LR (long Rifle) whats the "long" bit about? the rounds came from a big biscuit tin type tub Lapua? Pistols were certainly good fun and totally different to shot gunning (although my first card did look like a pattern test!)! we were only shooting at 13m but one handed takes some skill! Now i understand better why people paper punch and it seems even more crazy that useless handgun is still in place! There were plenty of people at the range having there first or second go (mostly tourists who wont be able to continue when they get home) and really enjoying the sport from young uns to old (one regular is 83 and going strong) men, women all totally safe. I do the there Sporting Association Slogan, "I love my country, but fear my government" how apt..... next time i am in the RFD's a .177 air pistol may be on the cards (but where has the facilities these days?) The guys at Jersey Pistol Club were really nice and friendly I recommend if you get the chance to go to Jersey you should arrange to go along. Cannon
I shoot .22 pistol regularly and the cartridges are the same for pistol as well as rifle. Very fun and cheap in comparison to 9mm or .38/.357. We're still priveledged enough to have them over here
Paddy Galore!
i'm pretty sure 22lr is the same size all across the board, then there's 22 short, which has a shorter case length (no **** Sherlock) amd 22WMR wich is a tad bigger than lr and about 3x the power. Sounds like you had a riot chap, here's hoping they get a repeal on the hand gun ban

You can have pistols here...provided you dont mind having a longer than normal barrel and a rod comming out of the butt so its atleast 24" long overall. Clicky! Clicky! Yeah i know about Black powder and LBR's etc but to shoot an actual "pistol" would be preferable also £600!!!! bit extreme for something i would do occasionally..... Buchmark Rifle (lots more wood!) is only £460 Brand new!!!! http://www.guntrader.co.uk/GunsForSale/110201153225001 I think thats what they were using in Jersey the one i had was different i think Edited April 3, 2011 by HDAV

welsh warrior
i know if hand guns were allowed in the uk id spend 1000s on them ! not becuase for protection or anything like that its just i love hand guns lol from the little 22 one to 44 mag id have them all. i like to watch those big shooting ranges they have in the usa where they seam to be allowed anything ! from auto hand guns to 50 cal snipers.but of course that is a dream in our country :( ...just my thoughts if there was one thing i would change about our uk laws is that we have the same laws as the usa ... just need more education on firearms

Jaguar Warrior
I used to shoot .22 pistol many moons ago and reading about HDAVs enthusiasm takes me back... The ban was in 1997, nearly 14 yrs ago so assuming most people won't tend to fire a rimfire pistol until they are 18, it means that anyone younger than 32 will never have, and possible will never have in the future, chance to experience it. I miss it, but have had chance to experience it, but I guess its probably worse to have never had the chance. Its all about relaxing, breathing and 'getting in the zone'. Due to the fact that it isn't very physical, its possibly the most tranquil form of shooting. Due to the fact that it isn't very physical, its possibly the most tranquil form of shooting. The level of "relaxed concentration" required was amazing! I really enjoyed it and not in an adrenaline filled way but a "being at peace" way i normally shoot clays and this was totally different, my GF and her friend who lives on Jersey were bored after 2 deatils I just wanted more! Not in a gun totting nutter sort of way but in a I can do better challenge myself way. It is a real shame that pistols were outlawed to the target shooting community and general public for no appreciable reduction in gun crime. I am seriously considering membership but at £200+ per session just for flights it makes clays and even driven game look cheap!

But back in the days when we had them too many idiots were getting into playing rambo with the big stuff, it was always a foregone conclusion that something would have to give. We just never thought it would all end so tragically. You can still do black powder pistol if you want to, contact the MLAGB and find out your nearest club.
