Medical question

Hi all, need some advice, I am about to apply for my sgc but on the form it stipulates if you have ever seen your doctor for depression or similar type of disorder. I have only just been prescribed a low dose of anti anxiety medication as I am at university and suffere from anxiety at exam times. Will this go against me do you think ? In every other respect I am functioning normally (I think). ;) just at the age of 42 I have decided to increase my education and get anxiety near exam time. I was previously a fac holder. Thoughts please.

Dave.

The best person to ask is the FLO. Whatever we advise on here will count for nothing. I would not like to condemn your chances, nor give you false hope.

I trust the medical condition had nothing to do with your being a former FAC holder. If it was, I suspect you will struggle.

Good luck.

Thanks all, i surrendered my fac when the pistol ban came into force back in 1996.Our local clubs all closed down and i couldnt afford to go to the nearest rifle club so decided to pack it in. I have recently joined a clay shooting club here in South Wales though and love it. Have had a couple of lessons and want to go regularly. The club is very friendly and well laid out (and the bacon butties look good too) :)

As mentioned, this is a very recent condition that only surfaces due to anxiety over exams at university but my doctor said that i should stay on the medication for about 6 months maximum. It is the lowest dosage posible and is only short term.

You will be fine in declaring your medication.there are proper tests for depression, being stressed over exams etc does not mean that you are depressed, nor does taking the tablets, which are issued for a number of reasons.

They will check with your doctor, who cannot say that you are depressed and under medication for it,because you have not been tested for depression.

There are some spooky coincidences here. I also surrendered my FAC after the pistol ban, I use the moniker Soupdragon on other forums (thought it was taken on here when I joined ) and my name is Dave. I'm also in my forties and did have a go at edumacating my self with OU a few years ago.

This isn't like the plot of of some horror film where I come home one day and you're in my house and my Mrs and kids deny they know me! :o :o :o

If you are anything like me, as soon as you renew your SGC (and your FAC - go for it) you'll regret all those years of lost shooting. Good luck with your licence application (you'll be fine), your born again shooting career and your exams :good:

Dave, as they others have said declare it on your application form. What will most likey happen is as part of the police checks they will check with your doctor to see if the doctor is happy for you to be granted a SGC, as they say been there, done it and got the T shirt.

You might find when it comes to your interview the topic may come up, but only to say they have approached your doctor and say what the doctor said.

Thanks Vampire. my doctor did an online test with me where i had to answer a series of questions which tested for depression and anxiety. My result for depression was virtually nill whereas my result for anxiety was 17 out of 21 . It was me that asked for help not her reccomending.

Blunderbuss... that really made me laugh... when is your birthday ??? lol.. i am so looking forward to getting back into shooting again. It has been too long. I used to have a large range of pistols and semi-autos and enjoyed every aspect of ownership and shooting. From cleaning them, reloading my own ammunition and taking part in police pistol & practical pistol comps. As you can imagine, it was a sad day when i sold them and gave up the sport. BUT .. i have now found clay shooting and hopefully will be out there as often as possible. Thanks for the good wishes too Dave. Much appreciated.

Dave.

I was mainly into Police Pistol, PP1, 2 and especially 1500 - loved it, I also reloaded - I had a Dillon progressive press that used to chuck out 9mm and .38 special (148gr wadcutter, 2.7 gr of Bullseye) like nobodies business. I used to go the the NPA Anno Dommini meets at Bisley every year. I did dabble in practical, I did the UKPSA course but always preferred PP. Had a tuned S&W 686, a CZ75 and an old .455 Webley Mk VI for fun

Happy days

My birthday is later this month..... If yours is too, I'm gonna start hearing the Omen theme music :o

You are safe ! mine is in July  I had a .45 semi 1911, beretta 92f 9mm tricked out to comp. speck and a model 586 .357 mag with the full underlug, worked lovely with speedloaders. Bisley .. now there is a place. My shooting began with the Army Cadet Force many years ago, i was lucky enough to make the team for Shropshire and shot at Bisley 3 years on the run. 1984-86. As far as i know, i am still the only cadet ever to have won the cadet one hundred 3 times in a row and came in the top ten twice, receiving my colours in 85 and 86. As you say, happy days.

Thanks for the input Berettasv10, much appreciated. I see there are lots of people from Shropshire on here... I am originaly from Shropshire. Bridgnoth to be exact, anyone else from round there ?

Dave, like the others said, declare it and then ask your doctor to be your countersignature part of the form. That way, the FLO will be noted straight away that there is no problems. The doctor will charge but will be far better in your circumstance to get it done that way. Again, it's only my opinion but could save you a lot of grief! Best of luck with the application, you'll be fine buddy!

There is a winter league which is a nice intro to competitive shooting, I mainly shoot at treetops never shot crynant myself

  • 3 weeks later...

Sage advice guys, thank you so much. I never thought about asking my doctor to counter sign !!! Was going to ask my local councillor (lives 3 doors away) but doctor would be ideal.

Dave.

Just to let you know your GP will not be able to countersign your certificate unless they know you personally and not just as a patient. ;)

I was prescribed anti depressants after the death of a family member many years ago. I didnt take them but still declared it on my application.

I got my SGC and FAC no problem. Honesty is the best policy. :good:

I know what you mean ME, I am sporadic at best when it comes to taking tablets. I have declared all on my application and am now looking for a gun cabinet. Anyone out there with a cabinet for sale ? Also will be looking out for either a Lee load all II or a mec reloader.
