Low powered .22Rf Rounds

Recommended Posts

HI all

We will be shooting branching crows in the next 2-3 weeks. They will be out of range of an air rifle. On one side of the wood near by there are a few horses kept and which rulls out a shotgun and I do not own a moderated one. This would be a perfect application for an FAC air rifle as discussed recently. I read on here a while back about a low powered .22RF round was available, much lower than a .22 Sub which will be ideal. Any ideas who makes makes these please?

Thanks Guys.

Billy, Points well made and taken in. The reason for the post was that I was not at all happy with the thought of shooting .22 subs skywards, albeit in to dense cover and remembered reading about the CCI. Sixhills 69. Yes FAC air would be ideal in several locations on our permission. Time to stop havering and call the FLO. And thank you for the CCi information.

Thanks again

FAC air is pretty handy, this is one very good example of when to use one.

I have heard those low powered .22rf rounds can be pretty poor in terms of grouping as well. I guess it might depend on finding the right one for your barrel, but if you can afford to buy a FAC air it is so much easier.

Tricky subject, and it must be ** years since I have used Caps or Shorts in a .22lr (not quite as long since I have used Longs and Shotshells but still a long time).

I'm sure times/technology have changed, and they may well be good now, all be it difficult to find and probably not cheap.

But this is one of the reasons I still run a FAC air rifle, it doesn't get a whole load of use but certain jobs crop up and it works!

:good:

Glad you took my concerns well. Usually the new guys on here tend to go off on one and leave ;) You're likely to last forever on here

:welcomeani: to the forum.

Out of range of an airgun? Just how tall are these trees? :o

Challenging then, but not impossible for a 12 fpe air rifle.

Sure, you'll miss a few (haven't we all?) but I'm no Geronimo and have had success with my HW100S with similar trees.

Doing brancher day this year too - can't wait!! :D

get real shot placement @ 12ft lb needs care on crows added to the fact that 100ft up and 30yds from the base is out of range. Shooting crows with std 12ftlb air is challenging to say the least as you need very good fieldcraft to get close enough for that clean shot. fac air giving you confident an accurate 50yds shots is still hard enough, but the only real option in this case imo

Anyway forget CB caps and the like accuaccy standards mean that the above shot is more down to luch than good aim and thats for a body hit (kid you not they are that bad) last box i had i took back a 90% full box to the dealer and told him to dispose of them for me

hi mate i started a post a while back about these for shooting round barns so i got 100 to try,

they are very quiet but thats as good as they get they are not very accurate at over 20meters at 25 meters they where 2inch low and as the target gets further the drop off very quick,

so for shooting round the barns and up to 25 meters they are ok just any further forget it,

but this is just my findings others may say different

I don't find them to be out of range of 12fpe, and I'm no special shot.

Field craft is much less important when shooting branchers as they cannot evade you by flying off.

When shooting branchers, I'll take an adult out if possible, but the aim is to thin out the squabs isn't it?

Damn good, challenging sport too.

Before a brancher day, I spend time practising on leaves in the tree tops to make sure I'm 'on the money' on the day.

I meant challenging when your shooting in windy/gusty conditions!

No4's! Is there much left of the squab?

ah, challenging as in chancy shots in the wind with your 12ft lb gun that takes us back to my first post on the subject  good grief who eats baby crows anyway- YUK!

Lol! To be fair, only going to be doing rook pie!

With squabs and you're timing your shots between gusts, I seem to clean hit or clean miss them. Haven't had an injured squab so far.

Not saying the venerable shotgun isn't a good tool for the job at all. Just noisier and more expensive to run.

And, getting back to the OP, I maintain that in my experience, the 12 fpe is a fine tool for the job, in the right hands.
