Steve_C
I don't store my shotguns / firearms at home (Wifey's rules!), which means that I have to go and retrieve the relevant item en route to wherever I'm going. This isn't a drama during the day, but if I'm going out early or coming back late, it can be a little problematic. I've managed to get Wifey to agree to a small safe in the house for temporary storage, but I simply can't find what I'm looking for despite weeks of searching. Width isn't a problem, but most safes seem to be 250+mm deep which won't suit my purposes. Because I'm only looking to store a single firearm, it can happily be stored sideways, which means that the internal depth of the safe only needs to be enough to accomodate a rifle / scope, or about 65mm. The closest I've come across is the Brattonsound VS3, but this is expensive for what it is and is still 152mm deep and has no separate ammunition locker, which makes the whole exercise even more costly. I've spoken directly to Burton Safes who claim that they have a custom manufacturing service. I asked them to quote for a GS3 with an external depth of 100mm. Bearing in mind that a standard GS3 can be bought for around £170, I was expecting (and would have been happy with) a price for the custom unit of about £250, given that the only difference is the fabrication of the external casing. After four weeks, they came back with a price of £800 + £60 shipping! This ridiculous price was "justified" on the basis that it was a one-off. The question is, does anyone else have a similar requirement? If so, they may consider reducing the unit price for a larger quantity
Gordon R
I would buy a cheapy and get local metalworks / fabricators to slice the back off and reposition to your required depth. It wouldn't take them many minutes.

guss109
I have a spare that is w200 d22 h1350 mm let me know if it's any use. It's a double lock on it. Even with carriage it would still be slot cheaper than a custom made one
Cranfield
I have a friend with four guns chained to cross beams in his loft and his FLO is quite happy with that. Do you have a loft ?
Steve_C
Thanks for the replies HI if you find one suitable dependant where you are Ill mod it for you wont cost you much, I manage an welding shop for a sheet metal company but I could do this at home as I have my own workshop no probs. Alan I really appreciate the offer, but I think you're a little too far away (I'm in Berkshire). I had considered Gordon R's suggestion before putting up my original post, but I wasn't sure if such an extensive modification to the casing might put my local FLO off. I'll need to discuss it with him, as it looks like the simplest and cheapest way to get to the solution that I need. I have a spare that is w200 d22 h1350 mm let me know if it's any use. It's a double lock on it. Even with carriage it would still be slot cheaper than a custom made one Could be, but would still need to be cut down. Does it have an internal lock box? I have a friend with four guns chained to cross beams in his loft and his FLO is quite happy with that. Do you have a loft ? I do have a loft, and I had considered the option of putting a cabinet up there fixed to the wall, but for various reasons this isn't a workable solution. gixer1
There should not be a problem with the flo for modifications, I had a cabinet that was cut down and rewelded, remember that the standard they check to is can the cabinet be opened with what is available in the average house (such as kitchen utensils etc) Cut the back and reweld it, if a competent welder does the work it will probably be a higher standard than the bsi cabinets!! My last job was at a company that did loads of sheet metal / fabrication work, so could have got the modifications done for nothing. Curses! guss109
No internal lock box sorry. Could you not just use a separate ammo box like a petty cash tin or the like
Steve_C
I had assumed that any ammunition storage had to be secured to the wall in the same way as the safe. I hadn't thought of using something like a petty cash tin, but if it's acceptable then it's a possibility. I'd just prefer to have everything contained within the main safe. njc110381
I'd cut and shut a deeper one. Often the BS mark sticker is on the door so just leave it on there and I bet the FEO wouldn't even notice! I do have to agree that your mrs should be told how it's going to be. Not that her opinion shouldn't be considered as it's her house too, but she is being rather unreasonable. The guns will be in a locked safe that only you have access to so "the kids could get to it and get hurt" or whatever excuses really don't cut it. I'd say you could spend all day with houshold tools trying to get into one without much luck! Get an RL7+ and fill it up! That's what I did and my mrs didn't like guns either! They get used to it.
