abadshot
Right, one for you quad owners. I've got a second hand quad in .22lr waiting to be picked up when my ticket finally drops through the letterbox, I was wondering (already) is it worth putting in for a variation for .17hmr and if so do I get a .17 barrel for the quad or go for a whole new rifle? Thanks for your opinions.
apache
I looked at the Quad when I was getting my .22/17 set up. I could buy two brand new CZ rifles with decent scopes and mods for less than a grand - it was going to cost me more than that with the Sako with just 1 scope and 1 moderator! I chose the two gun route as it's far more versatile - if one has a problem or goes out of zero I can take the other. You could spend a lot of time re-zeroing the scope between the two barrels! You need a .17HMR to play with
Dave-G
Call the FEO and have the HMR and extra sound mod added to to your ticket before they send it out, most FEO's will agree the wisdom of the added safety of the HMR - and that should be a no cost option. Then get the 17 barrel and mod, when you have changed it you will rarely feel the need to use the .22lr barrel, so why have a whole rifle, scope and mod unused in the cabinet? On the odd occasion that you DO use the .22, barrel swapping will be much easier if you use a 6x42 scope on medium mounts: It's ample mag for rimfire hunting and set the 17 zero as standard and note the different zero clicks required for the odd times you use 22. As a starting point for barrel changes, the 17 will need approximately 32 clicks less elevation for 50 yards than the loopy 22 - assuming 1/4" clicks. That the 22 is on the downwards trajectory whilst the 17 is on its upwards trajectory is academic as this is only a starting point. Then fine adjust the 17 to 100 yards. The serial number of the .22 firearm will be the action number and the firearm type is a "rifle" The serial number of the .17 firearm will be the barrel number and the firearm type is a "barrel" It confuses the hell out of ordinary plods who check your rifles on a call out though if you have it in 17 mode because you will be carrying "3 firearms" - the .22 action, the 17 barrel and the 17 mod. Bewsher500
you can get two guns/scopes/mods for the price of one sako with two barrels but you still have two second hand cheapies instead of a nice Sako... wouldnt go back now. I have all four barrels and use detachable scopes. one moderator works on all four. listed as barrels on the FAC get the variation done before it comes back or you will end up paying twice surely? JRDS
Yes I sold 2 x CZ's to get my Sako, great guns.
Dirty Harry
I have a quad with hmr and .22. I don't use the .22 as the hmr is so accurate.
abadshot
Well, my feo came round the other night to inspect my new cabinet and I mentioned asking for a .17hmr barrel and he said no problem get the form in and I'll sort it for you I'm swapping it for a .223 space I have for target shooting, will this cost me? Not true in my case, which is funny since we share the same police force  I contacted the licensing dept about this exact thing last week - my point was that if I had a second barrel recorded with its own serial number on my rifle and left my .22lr barrel in the cabinet I technically dont have it recorded anywhere on my cert :o when I pointed this out to them they said "oh yeah" so now I have to send my license back with proof(?) of the barrel so they can add the serial number of my original barrel! scotland rifles
well i did the same. sold 2 16" cz's 17 and 22lr to get the quad. cracking rifle used all 22" of barrels out to 300 yards with the hmr, but never used the 22lr, so i sold the barrel and the 2 mags and got a cz 452 2e and it now sits in the cabinet doing nothing, so i am now selling both my cheap 22lr and my mint sako quad to by a 17rem fireball. the quad is a nice rifle and it was on sale here but for some reason it has been removed, as the lads say, if you can get the variation for other barrels before you get your ticket do so. you then have 5 years to make up your mind what to have,(ps hm2 ammo is silly money). 17 hmr ammo here is getting close to £18/00 per box of 50 :( bob. scotland rifles
I've got a space for a .22 mod, will this be suitable or will I need to get a variation for that as well? just ask for the same mod to be used on both, IE: a ase utra. a DM80 are both usable on both rifles and there are a few more out there, bob. Brad93
As said the quad although it is a very good well built rifle needs rezeroing everytime you change the barrel and is experience wives compared to two equivalent CZ's or if your budget stretches further you may prefer the anshutz rifles which I've heard are very good accurate rifles
dust
Sako...wouldnt go back now.I have all four barrels and use detachable scopes. How does the 17hm2 barrel shoot? To the OP, if the Quad fits, and you feel comfortable not having an action for all of your barrels, and you can get used to resighting for different barrels, go for the Quad. If not, then don't. Will someone else be likely to join you? Will an extra gun be more useful than the extra space, meaning grab case number 2 and open it, as compared to grad allen wrench, release barrel, install new barrel, tighten allen wrench, reload magazine or change magazines, rezero scope with chart or shooting. bsamatt
i have a sako quad in .17hmr aswell as a .22lr browning t-bolt, and no matter how good the browning is it just doesn't get used. In my opinion get the slot for the HMR before you get your ticket, as i believe ts a much better round than the .
Dekers
Seems like an old one doing the rounds again, but anyway.............. Look, life is simple, and nobody can tell you if you NEED another calibre except yourself. I have 7 FAC tools and an assortment of SGC and air tools as well, the reason is simple, I need them all. One is NOT better than another, it is different, and does a different job, I endeavour to take the tool for the job when I go out. The Quad is a SINGLE calibre for the VAST majority, treat it as such, forget this malarkey of changing barrels, it is of VERY limited use, but must have a place for a few. The new CZ is supposed to be of a similar nature, but what use is it, or the quad? Think about it!

The new CZ is supposed to be of a similar nature, but what use is it, or the quad? Think about it! I did and can't see any reason to stash a very rarely used rifle stock, barrel, bolt, moderator and scope in my cabinet when I could just have a barrel and moderator tucked away behind the other rifles. Easy to take the spare barrel and mod out too when going shooting in case a change of plan occurs without leaving a complete rifle in an unattended car. Once the 'zero's are known a couple of zeroing shots are all thats needed. Foster: I'm a bit confused about your issue as the .22lr barrel in the cabinet is a temporarily removed component of the whole rifle as identified by the serial number on the action and your certificate. It takes just a few seconds to swap back the barrel if you meet up with officer who can't grasp the concept - and a short 6x40 mag scope that allows a swap without removing it. I had to do just that when local plod were called out to me whilst on holiday in Cornwall where I share several permissions with my brother who lives down there.
