saxosim
Hiya Just wondered what magnification/ type of binoculars anyone would recommend for pigeon/ rough shooting? Will keep an eye out for a cheap pair in the future but don't know what is suitable to use? Cheers, any advice appreciated Thanks Simon Edited May 1, 2011 by saxosim

Beretta28g
What price range would you look at.
utectok
I love scopes my current is an optolyth 25x70 telescopic number I picked up on the bay. Unbelievably good an 50m field of veiw for spotting birds on the wing. I find binos not enough magnification but each to his own
saxosim
What price range would you look at. Don't really know as haven't got a clue what are good or bad ones what sort of price and type do you use? Probably budget end of the scale whatever that is in the reasonable bracket? Thanks Edited May 1, 2011 by saxosim
Beretta28g
The Hawke range is quite good, http://www.hawkeoptics.com/index.php Or if you want to go a bit more up market something like Leupold but dont expect much change from £500 I like Hawke stuff, very good quality for the money. I have some Hawke Pro Stalk, http://www.hawkeoptics.com/binoculars/prostalk/index.php Dad has given me his old Swaroskis, http://www.swarovskioptik.com/en/products/binoculars-slc-56/technical-data He has now been given some super expensive ones as a retirement gift Ziess i think. http://www.zeiss.com/c1256bcf0020be5f/Contents-Frame/bc3682a8807ae5288525754d004f3f16 Edited May 1, 2011 by Beretta28g

rtaylor
I bought an older pair of Carl Zeiss binos of ebay for £35, absolute bargain, crystal clear. They normally go for around £100. Mine are 10x50 perfect for what I want, pigeons, rough stuff, deer etc. They are the Jenoptem, made in East Germany, DDR, worth a look, I'd recommend them from my experience with them. My dad still has a pair of 7x30 which are donkeys years old. http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Carl-Zeiss-Binoculars-/320692145468?pt=UK_Photography_Binoculars_Monoculars&hash=item4aaabdcd3c#ht_500wt_946 These are in better condition than mine but otherwise the same. Cosd
http://www.7dayshop.com/catalog/product_info.php?cPath=777_1&products_id=107160 These are excellent for pigeon shooting, they did have an offer on these for £19.99 but that was a while back. I've had these for over a year, great for spotting pigeons. A few people have bought these on the forum and they have had some good reviews. Great value for money.... saxosim
Cheers cosd that was the sort of thing I had in mind, I shall have a look around at reviews of them as they mention in their advert Regards Simon
utectok
I think my scope was around £250 not bad considering a new one is £850 ! I'd recommend going to a store and trying some even if ur going to buy a second hand ones they won't know. It's quite a persponal thing really
utectok
Oh and get a big object lens mor important than magnification IMHO espcially in poor light another good reason for scopes over binos.

I have these also They have lived in my glove box for the last year, I use them almost every day and are just the job for spotting pigeons. Admittedly you pay for what you get, but I just need to spot the pigeons across fields, not count their feathers

Catweazle
I bought Hawke Endurance 8x56 for £49.95, and I'm very pleased with the optics. They were originally £169 http://www.opticswarehouse.co.uk/proddetail.asp?prod=HawkLR856CL

arjimlad
Another vote for the 7-day shop 10x42s. The picture quality is actually rather good and better than you might expect for the money.

Another vote for these, I'll often use a little rangefinder when I'm laying up but I use a pair of these for deer stalking. Waterproof and fairly rugged, I paid £20 for mine but even at £30 they're a bargain for a set of waterproof roof prism binos.
bullet boy
The binoculars I use are Leupold Cascades 8x42.These are excellent optics and won't break the bank either at around the £250 mark.

I've got a pair of the above in 8x30 that I've had for donkey's years too, haven't a clue how much they cost. I don't know how they compare to more modern binos as I've never tried a pair but they help me spot pigeons/crows well enough. My wife has got a little pair of cheapo Greenkat 10x25 so she doesn't have to keep nudging me to borrow mine but they're not quite as good.
