Fisherman Mike
My lad has just turned 17 and wants to get a Motor Bike to commute to college in his final year after August. Its 34 years since I took my Bike test on a wet and windy day in Witney and 25 since I came off my Commando and never got on it again. So, things have changed a bit since then. Question is, which im sure someone wil know. What can he ride on a Provisional MC licence. Does he need to take any training. Is their a restriction on engine capacity ( Im sure their is ) Is their further restrictions on Power output. How long can he ride any machine on a Provisional Licence. Thanks in advance. Ped
Get him some decent training over and above the basic requirements, it'll make him safer
Bleeh
Make sure he signs up to the organ donor list!
rcooke25552
I think he will have to do a CBT (£100 ish) which is basic training. Then he can get a 125 restricted to 11kw (I think) and his CBT lasts 2 years. Hope that helps.
Alex C
He will have to do his CBT as a minimum, that will let hime ride most things up to a 125cc on L plates and carry no passengers. This last 2 years. He could do his direct access which will allow him to ride any bike but restricted to 33bhp for 2 years. This would allow him to carry a passenger. What ever you buy him, please please spend some decent money on kit for him. Minimum spend of a couple of hundred on a lid and a decent armoured jacket, boots and gloves. Unpractical to expect him to don the leather pants but a least a decent pair of jeans. Do not skimp and at least if he does have an off, which he will, you will never wonder if a few more quid spent would have helped protect him better. I saw a typical local scrote come off his scooter in a cheap lid and track suit bottoms and trainers, he was an absloute mess and is still limping 2 years on. Hope that helps

highseas
yeh just a cbt its 125 quid and lasts for 2 years, you are limeted to 125 cc, i would recomend a honda cg 125 100% bomb proof never fail and ultra safe
Horrocks
Make sure he signs up to the organ donor list! That kind of comment is what my uni friends would refer to as Deep Banter.

I was a despatch rider for a while. Convince him that every single other road user is trying to kill him and he'll probably survive.
Curly87
Tell him to ride as if he is completely invisible to other road users! never assume you have been seen by another road user and unfortunately indicators are no longer an indication of what they are about to do! As long as he has a good sense of what is going on around him he will be fine! I believe riding a bike has made me a far better car driver! aj85
if he is 17 or older he can ride up to a 125 cc motorcycle on a cbt. the cbt is compulsory basic training and lasts 2 years, and can then be renewed or a full motorcycle test taken. i am a motorcycle training instructor and specialise in cbt. part of the course will be safety and equipment talk. (which i really try to drum into people) if you need any advice or have any questions feel free to pm me. i have found the most important thing to get into the younger students heads is to check their blind spot before they move the bike and also to hold their position in the road. too many younger learners have no road experience and so get nervous and hesitate when approaching junctions etc.
yankeedoodlepigeon
Don't get him a RS125 unless you like doing engine re-builds. A Cagiva Mito would be a nice start not too dear and nice looking. And as already said be safe first. Lea
artschool
I had a Suzuki intruder 125 to start with but I think high seas suggestion of the Honda is a good idea.
yankeedoodlepigeon
No you can't go wrong with a CG125 for commuting but bearing in mind that he might want a slight bit of street cred being 17. NSR 125, CBR 125. Just avoid the Chinese makes like I didn't
Justintime
I have rode bikes since i was 9 and watched the test get harder and harder for motorcycles cbt etc i even started to teach but let me say this there is NO substitute for knowlage and road craft. As has been said GOOD LID GOOD GLOVES GOOD JACKET& TROUSES try and get him out with someone to show him some road craft. If you lived nearer to me i would take him out and show him what to look for etc i aint the best in the world but i have survived on the highway on motorcycles for 41years come rain or shine summer and winter if you want to chat and i can help pm me and i will give you my phone number
