I know am going to get mixed views on this but which DSLR would you opt for and why between the Nikon D3100 with 18-55mm lens or a Canon EOS 500D with 18-55mm & 70-300mm lens kit?

Wasn't sure where to post this so if it needs moving I apologise.

i wouldn't buy a camera with lens (ie kit) - i'd get a body only then go for a Sigma 18-200mm lens if you want a do-all.

(i've got an old Canon Eos 350D, 18-55, 90-300 and the Sigma 18-200 which really does most things)

Having said that - don't overlook the Sony Alpha's - the in camera capabilities are amazing (ie stabilisation is in the body not the lens - so all lenses are stabilised, they also have auto-stitch panorama modes etc.)

Ill second that, Iv shot with an A330 for the last year and a bit and I cant fault it. The big plus side for me was you can pick up all the old minolta lenses on fleabay for pennies and they are the same fit so they work fine, you occasionally pick up a real gem.

....and I'll third that. Picked up an as new A230 for a couple of hundred quid off ebay. Wasn't expecting too much of it, but what a brilliant camera! Cannot fault it for the money, the only thing it's missing is live view on the LCD, but the not much more expensive next up models rectify that if you need it.

Picture quality, speed, and useability is all spot on. Big :good: from me.

Eos Lenses or old FD?

I use OM olympus fit lenses on my canon DSLR, I have a Zeiss 28mm f2.8 which is excellent for night time photography.

Hi EOS from the 35mm Just check the contacts on the lense to body are the same. I believe there is a 1.6 magnification on the focal length when you use the film/dig lenses.

Im just a happy snaper not a techie. :good:

Hi With any SLR the camera is only as good as the lens I have three cameras a bit long in the tooth now they are a Canon G5. fixed telephoto F2 Lens, ACanon 400d great camera bought a 18mm to 70mm lens to go with it for Potrait work, and a canon mark 1D brilliant for fast moving subjects shoots at 8 frames per second.I bought a 24mm 104mmL lens, and a 28mm - 200MM L LENS to go with it apart from the first lens they are all interchangable with the 400D And the Mark 1D. bearing all this in mind the camera I use the most and it is always with me is the G5, it is a very versatile camera with a swivel viewing screen probable 18 - 200mm telephoto and shoots at 4 frames per second if requiredits only 5 mpixel but I have enlarged pictues up to 3ft X 2ft without any loss in sharpness.I think most people myself included buy a camera because of all the gadgets shown in the advertising blurb. and once again like me fail to use more than 15 percent of it. You have to decide what you want the camera for and find a camera that fits the profile, if I was hard up and had to sell a couple of my cameras i would keep the G5, I hope you enjoy the 500d but now find yourself a good telephoto to go with it the more you pay the better the end result, the lenses which comes with the camera are very basic ok for snapshots but for real quality you can,t beat a quality lens, the annoying thing is Canon like the others I suppose bring out a camera every year which is almost tthe same as the last but with a few extra mpixels and once again no good having a 15thousand mpixel camera with a poor lens because the lens just is not good enough to take advantage of the powerfull processor in the camera.

I hope this help anyone buying a camera slrs are great, with a goods lens, if you plan on buying a large telephoto a tripod is a must otherwise you will get camera shake which causes blurring

Best regards

Thanks Mickthemiller,

You certainley seem to know your camera stuff mate.

I am, by my own admission, a complete novice with the dslr, I will invest in a good telephoto lens in the not too distant future, but for now I will try improve my own ability with the 75-300mm lens. Here's a pic I took earlier, it may not seem that grand, but for me it's a decent start I reckon.

Hi Sprags Thats a great picture for starters, If you want to know if you had camera shake or not load the pick into windows picturs and then enlarge it to its maximum allowed by the lens stop before the picture breaks up that wil show sharpness or fuzzyness from a bit of shack, but looking at your picture youve made a great start,

When taking the pics hand held, keep your elbows against your side take a deep breath, then take the pic this will help a lot, I can assure you most of my pictures would not pass the fuzz test as explained above withhand held pics. but it is still a good pic.

Sometimes when I am out with my two springers i will take two or three hundred pics load them onto windows ,delete all the hopeless ones, file the moderate ones, and I am probably left with a maximum of ten great shots, so my advice to you when your out with the camera, set it on auto, open the telephoto to midway, and just point and shoot dont worry about mistakes, if you get a static shot you can use your telephoto to get closer or further away, but dont try to get to close leave space around the pic, there are some very cheap cropping programs out there you probably had one with your camera, you can then cut or reposition your picture to what you like, but if you get to close you cannot add to the pic,

Need any help E Mail me

Best of luck

Nice shot of the dog Spraggs! :)

Mick has got some great tips in there. As for my own thoughts, when taking photos of pets and wildlife, I reckon the eye is the most important thing to use for a focal point. If the eye is not sharp the photo can fall flat even if the rest is good.

WEll done Spraggs you have a natural eye for a picture, but please don,t get to serious first and formost take what you see natural pics are the best,I would certainly get a tripod, and an electonic remote control with this you can set the camera on say your bird table watch from 20 - 30 yds away and snap away. But please the most important part of any kind of photography is to enjoy it , this applies to £15 snap shot cameras to £4000 professional

Once Again well done Sprags
