Catton Hall Clay Club

I haven't been to Catton hall in the last 20 years. Went today, on my way to Wales, to pick up a guncase from DSPUK. It was a decent ground back then, but looks to have moved with the times. Well kept grounds, decent safety cages and what appeared to be decent targets.

I will be making a return visit soon and will try to drag our shooting party over there. I would appreciate some info:-

Is it felt or plastic wads?

Which days are they open?

What do they have in the way of disciplines?

Price?

I have looked on their web site. Very glossy, but just about as useful as a chocolate fireguard.

It's most certainly one of the better grounds in the area, it's a major shame they don't open on a Saturday for practise, and later in the summer on a Wednesday

They put a good selection of targets on for newbies and experts alike, and is one of the few places you can shoot down hill, in the woods.

Wednesday is practise, it's non clay mate so you will need someone to button, but there will be plenty of people there..

Next Reg'ed comp is 26th June

Plastic Felt and steel allowed

There is a skeet layout but it's normally used as a ESP stand.

Open Practice day every Wednesday - 10:30 till 4pm

Sporting Bird

14 Traps

10.30am - 4pm

50 Clays - £13.00

75 Clays - £17.00

100 Clays - £21.00

refreshments available in our Shooting Lodge -

Dish of the Day and a Tea or Coffee - £5.00

**Please sign in at the Shooting Lodge prior to shooting** Thank You

Most of the info is on the web site

Thanks for meeting me and was nice to meet you -- We (mate and myself) had a good shoot today - nothing over the top but good enough to fool you if you are not paying attention which neither of us was. - Must pull my socks up in future. - If you go have a good day.

Im new to Clay shooting and am therefore not much good, but I would like to at least take part in a competition shoot just to see what the fuss is all about.

Catton Hall isn't far from me, so would the shoot on the 26th be suitable for a first timer? Do I need to be 'registered' to shoot? (not sure what that means...)

Any info appreciated.

PS I will give Catton Hall a call, but it would be nice to get some input from the shooting rather than corporate side as well!

If my memory serves me correctly I think Catton was my first registered shoot. It’s a good introduction to registered shooting as it’s a nice shoot not too easy or too hard, it will be of a harder standard compared to your corporate or practice stands though.

If you are not a member of the CPSA you are supposed to buy a CPSA day pass to compete in registered comps (its either £3 or £5) and you should not be entered in the prize fund. I don’t think I have seen any ground enforce this rule though and will let you do birds only at the normal price.

It’s well worth a try, just turn up pay your entry and enjoy the day I am sure there will be a few from PW going

:good:

It may be prudent to have a practise on Wednesday prior to the comp.

You will learn far more by walking around with Ian E than actually shooting the comp. if you are a poor shot.

Just my opinion.
