fishynom8s
took the dogs to the burghley game fair today, we had a lovely time till an other dog decided to bite our little spaniel across the face, he made the worst noise iv ever heard and has a cut below his eye about 15mm long and a scratch on his eyelid, jasper (the spaniel) has been to the vet she said its nothing to worrie about (looks worse than it is, but lucky it missed his eye) given him anti biotics and said it should heel fine. the owner of the dog just had a go at us makeing it seem like our fault and walked off, As we are new to dog owner ship we wer unsure what we should of done or do if anything like it happens in the future? forgot to say our dogs wer on leads all day sorry for the spelling
-Mongrel-
If the other dog attacked yours without provocation then, in your position I'd have been having some serious words with the other dog owner. Having said that, you've said that you are new to dog ownership and as such, are you sure that your dog wasn't at fault? Dogs don't generally bite without provocation. A dog on a lead is not necessarily a dog under control and vice versa, if your dog is pulling and straining on a lead toward a dog, then other dogs can take that as threatening? Paul T
If I take mine out to a game fair I always keep him on a short lead and have an eye out for other dogs. Just because other dogs are there does not always mean they are friendly - a lot will be owned by Joe Public and may have little or no social skills. Give all dogs a wide berth and change sides with him if necessary to keep you between the two dogs. If I see another dog that is being obviously friendly and quite laid back (and mine is being the same), provided the owner is aware, I'll let him pull they lead so they can 'introduce' each other. It's all common sense really. Maybe you spooked the other dog by getting too close too soon - who knows?
fishynom8s
thanks for the feed back, i think jasper will be givin all dogs a wide berth for a while. at the time he was on my partners left hand side quite close in and not pulling on the lead as we walked past a group of people standing with there backs to where we indended to walk the dog was infront of them so thought nothing of it, the dog came past the owner to get to jasper, so didnt actually see what happened just started peting the dog when my partner shouted 'your nasty dog just bit my dogs face' (she was very upset and in tears at the time) so probably not the best thing to say first, thats why im asking realy. Richie10
That's the worse thing you can do, I am guessing it is a puppy, restricting it's socialising will make things worse. Let dogs meet each other on a loose lead and don't stand there worrying, they will pick up on you being tense. Mine are perfectly fine with other dogs, but if a dog is aggressive they will give it wide berth, experience in meeting other dogs teaches that and restricting socialising won't allow them to learn. There is nothing worse than seeing pet owners pull their dogs away from each other and then later they bark at other dogs while they are on the lead. oscarsdad
What is very important is that if another dog does kick off that you don't react to it...if you react and get wound up or frightened then your dog will know and will react. If you are calm and just walk off with your dog they he/she will think nothing of it. It is hard when other owners are unreasonable - I have had a couple of altercations with other owners when their dogs have had a pop at mine, especially when the other dog is off the lead and then the owner says "oh, he is not very good with other male dogs"...well keep him on a bloody lead until he is then pal! Just don't let your dog see you being aggressive or he may join in! Anthony
kent
Game fairs aint great places for dogs, for a pup even worse- forget it, treat it like it never happened and never will again as dogs pick up on non verbal comunications way better than people. do therwise and you might end up with a nervy or get in there first type dog. chris o
something like that happend on the shoot that i beat on. i was working my spaniel in one corner of the field and there was a pointer on the other end a good distance away. the pointer for some reason crossed paths with me and were my dog was working till the pointer wanted to play. so mine joined in and wanted to play back till the pointer turned had him by the mussle and ragging him about till i went over and sorted it out then told the handler what had happend and started shouting at me. which is when i lost my tempor and told him to shut up and stop shouting or he will be face down in the mud not a good way of dealing with the situation i know but he was kicked off the shoot as i found out it was not the first time something like that had happend with this pointer and handler asked not to return. but it had a knock on effect with mine so every time he meets amale dog he goes nuts. i have now soughted that problem. but you got to be so careful around other dogs and just try to keep a good calm situation for them. D_No
very unfortunate, but at least he didnt **** up everything! Like others have said, I always compare dogs to toddlers, your reactions are critical, monkey see, monkey do type of thing. Good advice not to react and just walk away. On the other hand though, if your dog is the aggressor, make sure you give him a damn good telling off! D
