Fatcatsplat
Mate of mine called back in December saying he had a surplus 6 months old Jack Russell pup (from a litter of 6) that he could not get rid of. I quite fancied a Jack, so without thinking why he couldn't get rid of him, I picked it up and it's lived with us since then. Trouble is that he is dirty with 1's and 2's all over the house, hates my spaniel with an intensity and has now started getting nippy with people. I have 3 other dogs that I have got clean, trained and socialised but this little fella is beyond me. Short answer is that i want rid ASAP - Anyone got any suggestions? I have called various animal welfare shelters etc and they have all declined him - Happy to rehome a dog they have already but not to accept new boarders. I do not want to "take him for a walk with the gun" before anyone suggests it. I'd like him rehomed with someone who may be able to rehabilitate him as I think there's a nice dog hiding under there somewhere - I just can't get it out of him. Any ideas? Any ideas? have you had a vet check him out, the mention of his toilet issues and then becoming nippy suggests to me that he might have something wrong with him medically thats the route of all this. Devon Fox
Agree with Kent - I would have Him fully checked out before doing anything rash. terriers can be difficult that is for sure.
rickyspringer
would the dog work?? is it out of workers?? I would be setting up a home where it will be kenneled but experience lots of work, if not the option is definitely PTS by bullet or jab... get a picture up of him. roadkill
is shooting a dog legal? :look:
al4x
Its trying to establish its position in the pack and isn't where it wants to be, sounds like you could try a home with no other dogs or a working home where it will be kenneled. As its been passed about a bit already if no good home can be found that won't pass it on again then PTS may be the best bet.
kyska
is shooting a dog legal? :look: I would say yes, as long as you don't cause suffering or pain, then you find yourself on the wrong side of animal welfare/cruelty laws.

Think you are absolutely right - Rehoming would be my ideal solution, in a home with no other dogs. Would like to avoid the lethal option at all costs if possible. dazza
yes. Where does it state it's legal?
al4x
its probably harder to use the lethal option than pass the problem on. Unless a good home can be found its kinder to the dog not to pass it on and let someone else do the same.

apache
Where does it state it's legal? It doesn't need to specifically state it is legal because in this country is something isn't prohibited you can do it. Veterinary Surgeons Act 1966 with amendments ensures that euthanasia is not an act of veterinary surgery and can be carried out by anyone as long as the means is humane. In UK law a pet is considered 'owned' and you are free to dispose of it. Under the Animal Welfare Act 2006 you have a responsibility not to cause suffering. Assuming you have a legally held shotgun or your FAC is conditioned for the lawful killing of animals then you can shoot your dog, so long as it doesn't suffer. Fatcatsplat
Yes take the easy way out and give up on it. As i've said, i've had a good go at getting him straight, but it ain't working and it's causing problems indoors with dogs fighting, poop and piddle everywhere and aggression beginning to build, so i'm looking at alternatives so that he gets some kind of decent life with someone who'll appreciate him. I am not trying to justify what i'm doing - I'm asking if anyone has any helpful ideas or alternatives.
al4x
Re-home it. would you give it a home when it ****s everywhere and is iffy with people? If re homed it needs to be to someone who is good with dogs, possibly even someone reasonably old with no other dogs so its the focus of attention. I know someone who had a similar problem and it went to an old guy with a good sized secure garden and it changed straight away. No more need to exert itself to try and become pack leader and was a great dog but in a family with other dogs it had been a nightmare. If you can't find it a home then a trip to the vets simple, they will be sympathetic usually and if not suggest they help to re home. In all these cases you get the gobby and the Irish member butting in making it out to be all your fault but you can only do so much and passing dogs on pillar to post is easier for you but can be worse for the animal. I went through it with a horse it was going to kill someone, in the end it was kinder to do the right thing than pass the problem on
