hi, need peoples advise please, alse posted this on another forum that im a member. i have had my heart set on a cz 455 varmint laminated thumbhole in .17 hmr for targets and vermin for the last year or so, i planned to use this and then get a howa 1500 in .243 for foxing and long range targets. the problem is i can only buy one. the cz is £450 with 16" barell and screwcut etc, the howa is a pepper laminated thumbhole varmint model with predator 8 moderator and scope for £1000. the land outside my house has been granted for using a hmr and would be a great tool for the crows and targets but im not so sure that i would be happy using one on it as there is only a couple of acres with houses near by, this means i would have to go up the hills were i have permssion to 600 acres of land. if i take the hmr up there then the wind might stop me from hitting anything dedent at 100-150 yards. that makes the .243 the better option but at £1 per round maybe its 2 expensive for target shooting when im not hunting.

any help would be great

i think its the best calibre for what i need but the only problem is realy the wind, its always a slight breeze or even more and i cant help but think that the wind will blow the hmr rounds all over the place were as i have used a .243 in the wind and it was almost unaffected realy

As you're a newbie to the sport I suggest you go for the HMR. You can get lots of shots down it and get to know it before stepping up to the big toys. Money is an issue for you if you can't get both and at .243 prices you'll soon fire enough rounds to have bought the rimfire! think of it sensibly - 1000 rounds for the HMR is £200ish, 1000 rounds for the .243 is £550 even with the cheapest of ammo.

When you have a new toy you will want to shoot it. Waste the HMR rounds and save yourself some money, then get the .243. Wind may bully the HMR around but that will just teach you fieldcraft so you can get closer. :good:

someone has mentioned to me about getting a 22-250 or a .223. had a wee look into it and looks like they are both capable of around 3500-4000 fps. what is the ammo price for .223 or 22-250 compared to a hmr, it should be better in the wind and if its not to expensive then it would be good for targets

To be fair to you its not all about the speed, some people think if they use the fastest travvelling bullet known to man it will kill better, the fact is, any well placed bullet will kill. I would work your way up and start with the HMR, great little tool, good fun for targets, great at longer range vermin, I love mine for evening bunnies that are outside the warrens, or crows on fresh plough. You can go wrong with what the others have said, after all, they have been there an done it. I dont own a centrefire myself, but have shot a .308 and .22 hornet for about 8 years with the keeper, so I know what im talking about, £1 a bullet aint cheap.

Dont take this the wrong way, but I think you want a big rifle to know you have a big rifle and punch paper, instead of having a genuine use for one, but please correct me if I am wrong.

Get the HMR dude first, get good with that, save for a year and then buy a .223/22-250/243. :good:

scares the **** out of me this kind of post the idea someone can get a grant for a .243 without having the first idea about anything rifle related.

Ok ignore everything you have heard about the HMR and wind, it is affected but not to the point you have to use a .243 on rabbits. You can do but its not a bunny gun unless you like turning them into tiny bits.

Just go out get an HMR and get used to using it, you may be surprised what it is capable of then when you've some experience buy the .243 for foxes.

Sound fair to me, but I still don't like the HMR if it is particularly windy, they do go all over the place....but I certainly would not think take the .243 instead.

You just have to be much more considerate with the shot and situation. :good:

thanks for all the advise and comments, i have never used a hmr so im going on peoples reviews (maybe a bad idea?) no one around my area uses them and my local rfd tryed to put me off one. i have used a friends .243 for years so im quite used to it now, im sure my local rfd does some sort of military round for £10 per 20. i dont even have any slightly sheltered land where i could take the hmr, the land i have is 600 acres of pure hill on one side of the valley i live in. my other option is to get the hmr and not use it when its quite windy

If it's windy where you live and you're worried about the HMR, what about a WMR? Just putting it out there...

Have you got a tin hat...all the charts will tell you WMR is worse than HMR in the wind.

Personally I don't give a fig, and indeed the charts may well be right, the reality is I get on better with my WMR in the wind than my HMR!

Perhaps I better go and dig out my tin hat as well!

i went into my local rfd today and discussed it with them. hmr ammo there is £8.50-£11, they advised i take a .223 and he can get me full metal jacket ammo for £8 per box of 20. this would make it not too much dearer than hmr for targets and will be good on fox etc, what does everyone think about that option.

cheers, james
