Lancs Lad
All, I was out last night on my shoot over the road and had a visit from two blokes in black and white. Quite funny really, entered my land, took rifle out of the bag and loaded up. Crept down to my L.U.P (lying up point for all you civvies) and made myself comfortable. About 10 mins later I heard something behind me, thinking it was bunny wabbit I turned my head slowly around to see two large figures creeping up on my position. Refraining myself on swinging around the gun I recognised the large animals to be two boys in blue. I took off my face veil, laid down the weapon and stood up. Evenin All, I said. What can I do for you gentlemen. What you doing came the reply.................I saved the reply of "fishing" to my mind and said, shooting......Controlling rabbits and pigeons for the farmer. What gun is that...................? Air Arms Tx200HC I said. Can we have a look............ Yes...Just hang on whilst I discharge it. Shot fired into the ground and weapon duly handed over.... Off went plod 1 with gun whilst I was questioned by plod 2. I gave the big 3.....Name......address....date of birth............. You will have to stick bamboo shoots down my fingernails to get any more out of me you dirty nip................. So, what you doing then.......... Erm, shooting rabbits.............look at all of the holes and the decimation of the field, rabbit scrapes etc etc.. Whos land is it.....................Mr Ollertons I replied,,,,shall I call him... Ollerton, whos that then.....................(again I refrained.............the land owner dummy....) From here I took out the mobile and called the farmer....Hi Fred....Just with a couple of boys in blue.....can you have a word.... Word was said.......all clear.......... Copper then looks at rifle........in the understanding way that they do.......not knowing what to do with it or where to look....Had a shuftie through the scope.......blimey..........it looks like you are sitting right on top of them......... Yes.......it does doesnt it................ Moral of the story........ Make sure you take your shooting permission with you.............ps.........pandas are not classed as vermin in the UK......so I couldnt get away with it..... Lancs Lad
Good think to check out is GOOGLE EARTH. lets you zoom in on your address area via satelite imagery, Its perfect for getting individual fields laid out and your farmer to highlight those that are his and the extent of his boundaries. Hey,,,,,,,,,,I can see my house from up here.................you might even be able to see your own car on the driveway... Very handy....... Google search SATELITE IMAGES. Simon Roberts
Great! at least they came and checked you werent trespassing or anything. I take it they were completely OK with you?
SNAKEBITE
Who tipped them off then? At least they didn't take the rifle for inspection. I'm told the care and attention they give the rifles is akin to a one armed Spanish baggage handler.
Axe
A friend of mine phones the Police Call desk to let them know of his whereabouts when he goes out. Doing so will prevent such things like this happening. Food for thought eh?

the pelt man
A friend of mine phones the Police Call desk to let them know of his whereabouts when he goes out. Doing so will prevent such things like this happening. Food for thought eh? As do I & my shooting partner. Give them start time, finnish time, where, Car Reg, contact Number. We get a log number every time we go out. AND IT WORKS FOR YOU. We have been called twice this year already & a few last year. Members of the Public have called saying that they have seen men with guns. We just get a call to ask if we are still about to confirm that it is us that has been seen & thats it, no fuss & no waste of police time & tax payers money. AND most of all a good relationship with local Police which goes a long way for land checks, Cert renewal & better image. Just for one call lasting a couple of mins total relaxation. And to those who phone knowing what you are doing but want to be a pain in the butt to you & get you stopped. No reaction from the Police no flashing lights no wagon, Boy dose that "P" them off instead. Maybe you dont agree, but you aint going to change my mind The Pelt Man Edited April 12, 2006 by the pelt man
SNAKEBITE
I can see the sense in doing this however I do not have the faith in the police acting on the information you give them to do it myself. Maybe it is a habit that I should get into, it can't harm can it?
jonno 357
Myself and my shooting buddy were shooting one Sunday evening last year on our shoot when out of the blue came the dibble helicopter. We had been zeroing my 223(unmoderated) for while. I don't think anyone had called the helicopter out for us. I think it was making a casual pass, and decided to pay us a visit. It was hovering over us for a good 3-4 mins then ******** off over the hill and out of sight, we had a laugh because it was very very low and was very load and my grouping had altered slightly whilst they were having a play. This scenario went of for 8 or 9 passes and eventually they got bored of playing and decided they had enough. I don't know what they wanted to this day I never call any help desk or whatever, if I'm going out shooting on land I have permission to shoot on, I don't have to notify the police. Its just my personal choice. I've heard all the stories about people ringing up the police saying they have seen men with a guns. What a load of rubbish Do all good citizens walk there dogs at 3am in the morning ******* miles away from where they live with night vision googles Just too many internet stories Jonno
Dave-G
I'm with jonno - I rarely hunt before dark - and most of my permissions are in rural locations. I usually wait till anyone passing has gone before putting a lamp on to avoid alarming anyone who might make a call. I got a bit of a fright one night though, after despatching a bunny near the hedge of a field someone on the other side coughed and scarpered down the road. I shouted out they ought to get a torch. Never been questioned by police when out - but always give a cheery wave to anyone around on rare daylight sessions so they see I know they are there. the pelt man
I've heard all the stories about people ringing up the police saying they have seen men with a guns. What a load of rubbish RUBBISH, "NO STORY" I speak from ex. my shooting partner & i had just left the car & started to walk along the fringe of one of our shoots, when a man & woman jogged past we watched only to see (like in the films) the woman jogged backward looked over the hedge then jogged forward while saying to the man yes they have guns. Sure enough my Mobile rang and it was the police. After a very short chat it was back to shooting. If we had not phoned in then it would have been a dif story. This is the truth not a story. I dont care if you belive me or not. Other may see the point in getting a log number which dose save trouble, even the worse case getting shot themselfs by a trigger happy plod. Those that say they dont have to call they have a right to be there its there shoot, then get on with it, but please dont tell me that you care about the image of shooting if you take that line. Because it dont hurt to make a call & every body is happy. The Pelt Man
SNAKEBITE
After reading this I tried ringing the police and I am pleased to say I got a positive response from a "call handler" that knew exactly what she was doing. It was drama free and a good result. I can now say I am really surprised at the way it was handled and will try to get into the habit of doing it every time I go out. SB Just phone the log number in on your mobile then you have it if you need it,& you dont forget it. It did use to be a problem getting through & getting a log number, but as you say with the new call centres they know what they are doing & it takes only a couple of mins. P03
Dave-G, You have just hypnotised me ! It took me 5 mins to read that post  ..........Back to the point....it always pays to stay on the right side of Plod.....If some 'well meaning' member of Joe Public calls saying he/she has seen someone with a gun Plod has to follow a protocol. This can mean armed response/helicopters the whole ish and they don't like getting messed around any more than we do. So.... it makes sense to me to just make that quick call and possibly make everyones life just that little bit easier once in a while. Lancs Lad
Dibble did say that it would be a good idea for me to call and log when I am out and about, I did say that I needed to pop in to the local station and register that I am shooting on land around the area. Its one of those Yokel stations, where the door is closed most of the time and you have to use the big yellow telephone..... Have to catch them when they are open...........
