new to the flock
Well after a hard afternoons fishing for catfish yesterday with my youngest, AND no nap I might add It was off smelt fishing with a good mate of mine. We got down to the River around 9:45, going for a usual spot well away from the 200 other smelters down there I fired the first throw of my brand new cast net. You guessed it snagged on a rock on the first throw. One 6 inch hole later we were both throwing until 12:45. Now a 5 gallon plastic pail holds roughly 1700 6 to 8 inch smelt, we managed two nice pails, that were further broken down for our Fathers including one other mates who could not go last night due to work That works out about 340 smelt each. Exept for some reason I am cleaning my fathers this morning as well :( After meeting our mate who could not go and dropping his Fathers off, and having a wee chat, crawled into bed at 3 am this morning just to have the boys awaken me at 6:00 oh well I do have some fish on ice to clean and a net to mend  If the weather holds off to Lake Erie for some perch fishing on Saturday. Cranfield
"Smelt"? We have a sea fish called a smelt and they smell a bit like cucumber when rubbed (don't ask who first rubbed a smelt, because I don't know ). They are netted and make excellent dead bait for pike, but I have never eaten one. nttf, does this sound like the same fish you are catching ? Once young lads get a taste for fishing and hunting, there is no holding them. I had a Nephew like that, fortunately he grew up before he wore me out. new to the flock
Cranfield they sound the same. See here; http://forums.pigeonwatch.co.uk/forums/ind...pic=17168&st=0& and yes they smell like cukes and are very tasty NTTF
Cranfield
They definitely sound like the same beasties. I am now horrified at all the ones I have "wasted" on pike, when I could have been eating them myself. Before this year is over, I will have tried some smelt and I promise to let you know what I think of the taste.
new to the flock
lightly coated with itallian bread crumbs and deep fried yum Just use scissors to cut the head off behind the pectoral fin, then using the same scissors cut the belly to the vent. Use your thumb to evissorate and then wash clean. Egg wash and bread crumbs into the hot oil. You can peel the back bone and ribs out after cooking by grabbing the tail and pulling to the front of the body. NTTF
PestController
You're a mind of good information NTTF, they sound nice. Even though I hate you, cos you're always doing something outdoors away from the chores. Only joking mate, good luck to you and your boys, have fun. Whitebridges
Like Cranners, I've only used cucumbers for piking. I've got a few deadbaits in the freezer, can't believe we are talking the same fish here. Who's gonna fry one up first and report back? PS. Cranfield, could you please get on with it, live for today man. Edited April 14, 2006 by Whitebridges

Lord Geordie
I use Smelt for Pike too and also have Smelt OIl and Hyperdermic etc for injectin the oil into other dead baits I also find Sardines are good for Pike Not the tinned type I also used to use the Brine from a tin of Tuna to soak bread and make into balls and throw in the water near my bait in the hope the fish oils in the brine will attract the pike in LG Edited May 11, 2006 by Lord Geordie

Had some good Pike on them myself !
lurcherboy
You mean WHITEBAIT don't you? Lightly fried and bloody delicious. I had them in NZ NT, very expensive as the season, I believe was only a month long and you had to buy a license. I take it it's free in Canada LB

As for the bones....after frying pull the tail up and over the back and all the bones will come out leaving you with nothing but tasty, yummy fish. I can see I will have to do some up for you this fall. NTTF
