Lamping rabbits

I don't normally start my "lamping season" till the Autumn. This time of the year I can normally get plenty of sport in the summer evenings during daylight (When the grass is not too long). At the moment if you wanted to lamp you would not be able to even think about starting till at least 10:30 which means really late nights (And lots of earache from the other half) and my head likes to have a very close relationship with my pillow during the hours of darkness!

If you have plenty of rabbits showing try late evenings, there should be plenty of youngsters about which are relatively easy shooting. If you are doing it purely for "Rabbit Control" then it doesn't make any difference what size they are, they still have to be shot - but if you are "shooting for the pot" then you can just pick the bigger ones to shoot leaving the younger ones to grow to a reasonable size to give you some good sport later in the year and still get a reasonable bag throughout the year mate!

Pretty much got it there Frenchie :good: Might just add that lamping them too soon in the season educates them to the lamp when you still have other tools at your disposal, in the winter i realy need the lamp. The grass is realy quite high here now and i am limited to shooting them off the lawns

Late February to April is when we do most, simply because we can as long as its dry drive round the tramlines in crops and the crops are short enough to see the rabbits. Plus you get them before they have started breeding too much so it is more effective. This year they seem to have done well so we are still picking ones up at the moment in a couple of places but generally they won't get hit hard now till we have a little go once the drilling is up in October

We've been out for the odd evening, starting about 1930 and going right through 'til about midnight. There's quite a few around the field margins on newly silaged fields, but Entry Level Stewardship means they can just hop into the set aside out of sight.Frustrating.

I like to get out while I can though, much better than the telly, and there'll be plenty of nights in Winter when we can't get out.
