MM
Ok, rather urgent this one!!! Do Hamsters hibernate in the summer? And if not, are there any pet shops open on sundays? Fluffy is twice his normal size, and is not breathing. Need to replace him before youngest finds out...
artschool
Isn't this what small pets are for?
clubb699
I would say the garden centers are your best bet, they have selection of animals in our neck of the woods anyway. Good luck

stokie
Im sure you would have me drag it into a field and shoot it No but kids do need to learn that loved one do sometimes die It does save on wrapping them up in cotton wool for the rest of their lives

grasshopper
Replace it with something useful - like a Ferret, and tell them the Hamster morphed into it,just like a caterpillar does
Fisherman Mike
Thats what Pets are for when you are a child...you keep them for a while and then they die... Introduces the kids to the mortality of life and reduces the fear. Dont keep its death from the kids, let them help you bury it in the garden.. four-wheel-drive
I'm with you Mike on this one thing to think about is just because you think that all hamsters look the same dose not mean that your kids would not soon realise that the new one was not there pet just tell them that it is dead and take them out to get a new one. Boromir
What would you say if she noticed it wasnt the same hamster? She would be thinking you have done something bad to the one that had died.
Snap Cap
Do what I did when my daughters hamster died sudenly when she was at school. Bend the bars on the cage (helps if its in a cage though) I told her Snuffy had escaped by bending the bars as hamsters have super powers and he flew off like a super hero. You do feel a bit guilty about lying through your teeth especially with such a pile of **** such as that to your own daughter for a couple of days, but in all honesty she had forgotten about the thing by the end of the week. She now has a cat wich sadly won't do the same.
J@mes
Buy her a lizard instead. I bought a Gecko when I was 12, I'm now 27 and I still have her. I find her hunting interesting to watch, and she has a bit of character - she likes to watch TV. I get her out when I can (missus is terrified of her and the dog barks) but she'll quite happily walk over my hands or sit on my shoulder. Its a long term commitment, they live for about 25 years but at least you don't have the issue of them dying every 10 minutes like rodents do. MM
Well, Fluffy did go on a permanent hibernation. Decided to tell her the truth and she took it well. Off we went to the local garden center, which has a pet store inside........................er..........this is where it went wrong While fluffy is now in a Sky router box in the bin...............i thought it was best if we got one of these............... They had really posh rabbit hutches, and i thought my daughter would enjoy having this in the garden. What good is a hamster anyway? all they do is run round the house in a plastic ball Now Brian the ferret has a new house with en suite

four-wheel-drive
when I was young my sister had two budgies in a big wooden cage with a wire front we would put it in the conservatory when it was a nice day in the spring. Then one day we forgot to bring it in the house at night and there was a frost when we looked in the cage the next morning both of the birds was died and stiff. I buried them in the garden and put the cage in the shed nothing was said about the birds for two weeks when my sister missed them and we told here what had happened followed by floods of tears. I should add my sister was about 16 at the time and I was 14 its a funny old life when you think about it.
