well we can see who the shotgun shooters are over the true rifle men on here :D crocket save your breath, them that truly know about guns or should i say rifles will back you up as they know that a bullet does no hit a wall at 150 yrds and drop out of the air, no it keeps on going, most rifle bullets will go out past 1,000 yrds with ease, yes you may well need to aim 35ft above the target and aim 5ft to the left or right to be on target but once you are on your on ..range finder /wind meter/PDA/ to give you the reading you are looking for ,then just diel in your scope and if your rifle & bullets are on the money the rest is down to the shooter..i see your not saying you hit them every time only a fool would say that ,but you hit them now and then, a miss is a miss it will live for another day ,we all miss some times but as long as you have a safe back stop i see no harm. any rabbit being hit any where by a .223 b,tip bullet is as good as dead as the bullet will still be doing over 2,000fps at 500 yrds alot more speed than any shotgun or rimfire bullet will ever do even if it was at point blank range it would still be going faster. theres plenty of long range shooting on u-tube some guy on there is shooting rabbits at over 600yrds daily in the uk using a standed .223 not a 22-250 like yours which we all know is that little bit better ..this guy is only a man that loves his long range shooting ..nothing more !

extremely good shooting if its true, what scope are you using. My question is why,is it just something a little more interesting than paper and a bit more squishy.Everyone to their own I suppose but I would rather creep up and whack em with hmr, I find thats the fun of hunting. Then if your a chip eating and beer swilling something or other thats too fat to get out the truck and thats the nearest track you have no other option.

For me the appeal of lang range varminting is the enjoyment of the equipment involved.

Standard pencil thin barreled hunting rifles just wont cut the mustard for consistant repeatable 500yd shots.

Out of the box heavy barreled varmint rifles are acceptable but the joy comes from using a custom built varmint rifle crafted to your spec and choice of calibre.

Match grade barrels combined with custom or accurised factory actions will deliver the accuracy to hit small animals at range.

Combine such a rifle with quality optics, state of the art laser range finders, windmeters/weather stations, PDA's or smart phones carrying sophiscated ballistic programs, and you will get your bullet on target.

These bullets having also been chosen for their terminal ballistic effects wind bucking and drag reducing characteristics.

All set up on a sturdy portable shooting bench together with plenty of practice on static and reactive targets, this puts you in good stead to confidently engage live quarry at extended range and get the full enjoyment out of the equipment and style of shooting that you have chosen to pursue :D

Thats a pretty responsible way of taking long range shots a live targets, least you take away some of the grey area, my remmie 700 with homeloads with guestimation range finding(though over the years surprisingly accurate) will do me up to 200yd max, I'm not good enough nor the equipment. No, for me its crawling about in the mud and brambles to get as close to my prey as possible and delivering a fatal shot as accuratly as possible, trying to the best of my ability to narrowing down the things I cannot control.

A very good post. You realise you have limited capabilities and stay within them. Some of us have slightly higher capabilities and as long as we know them and stick within them thats just fine. ;)

Not sure of the actual range but I once shot myself in the bum with a dart from a Gat air pistol :(

I understand it doesn't sound as impressive as castrating gnats and as I have quite a big bum it's a fairly easy target but I was firing away from me at the time and after circumnavigating the Earth it actually hit me at 4:52pm 8 days later. Obviously if I had been shooting in the opposite direction with prevailing head winds it would have missed as I would have gone home for my tea by the time it got there. An easy mistake to make but this is how you learn to shoot responsibly :)

I think the post above should close this thread no one can top this.quality

It would appear to me that we are becoming a forum of wanna-be snipers . If some body could just explain to me the point of shooting a rabbit at 500 yards with a centre fire rifle ,I really dont see the point to it . Unless you want the bragging rights on internet forums .

Thats the way I see it to Harnser, what is the point and the likely hood of a humane and instant kill narrows with each yard you put on it. You have to remember one thing and that is this is a forum of blank faces and just that. I belong to several well known deer societies who work alongside the NAAONB and the Deer Initiative in controlling deer, this brings me into contact with some very experienced stalkers who know their stuff and getting as close as possible to the target for a safe shot is what you do. Admittingly this is not a topic on deer but varmints, though I dont see the differance really. What would be the point of sticking your pigeon decs out at 70yds just so you can test your ability and equipment (though George Digweed could prob do it all day long)

if i was the guy who came on here saying i shot 90 pigeon today with my shotgun would i not be bragging ? or would i be saying did`nt i do well! and im so pleased i did well i had to tell some one who would understand with out taking the **** ..seems to be the wrong place to post a post like this crocket ..there`s enough people out there that dont understand why any body would want to kill anything be it a bird or have four feet and fur on its back ! never mind killing some thing at ranges over 500 yrds ect we even have the hunter on the hunters backs over it..very strange indeed more of a under cover anti id say ! hunting is hunting dead is dead no matter how you do it ..just because you want to kill it at close range may float your boat using a air rifle to make things that little bit harder or you may feel the need to blow its head of using a hmr17! who is right and who is wrong ! both enjoy the hunt no matter how far or which rifle they use both are still hunting and as hunters we should all stick together not jump on others backs about it theres enough people out the doing it already ..if you feel the need to say you dont like some guy hunting at long ranges think hard about what your doing, your going out killing things and how others may well be seeing you.does crocket come on here and tell you what distance you can shoot at with your firearm be it shotgun or rifle or how you must go about hunting ! no ! so why tell him ..he is just a sportsman /hunter ,hunting how he enjoys it ...just because he can do it dont mean its wrong and its impossable ...hitting a target like a rabbit ay 500yrds must be like killing 50 rabbits you get the same buzz but you have only killed the one...

The thrill of any type of hunting is the stalk , be it rabbits deer or any thing, not the kill . To stalk a deer to 100 yards is proberbly one of the best thrills you will get from hunting . Not taking pot shots at mega ranges . I have stalked deer in close on many occations and decide not to take the shot because I enjoyed the stalk so much so I left the buck for another day .

REMEMBER THE THRILL IS IN THE STALK NOT IN THE KILL .

To me a successful kill is as much a part of the stalk as the rest of it but the eating is the best bit, do the long range chaps walk out and get the bunnies,no thought so, suppose they put it down to neccesary pest control. I have another word for it, a word often used to explain the job of a pancake maker. :D

.................Not taking pot shots at mega ranges

Harnser, by saying "pot shots" you are implying shoot and hope scenario, far from it mate.

Shots are truely calculated, target is identified, range is determined and wind speed as well as direction are plotted into a ballistics calculater,

Scope is dialled in and the cross hairs levelled at the target, breathing is brought under control and when everything feels right the trigger is gently squeezed concentrating on sight picture until the shot is let off.

Hmm... There really is no justification in shooting rabbits with a centrefire at that range. A fox, maybe. Blowing up a rabbit with 22-250 isn't pest control is it. Will it end up on someone's plate? No.

Those of us who venture out with a rimfire and shoot rabbits (hopefully headshots in my case) are controlling pests. They are then sold on. The subsequent earnings pay for all the bullets and fuel used. This is enjoyable and the farmer gets his rabbits thinned out.

Long range shooting as mentioned by the OP should be at targets or the Taliban.

Is training the rabbits to sit up still in the beg position for half an hour while you set up part of the regime or is that because your so far away the rabbits don't move cos they are not alarmed  . All this youtube footage is so destructive me thinks, young uns will just want ta replicate it. Clicked on one such piece of footage under,'shooting squirrel with hmr',it consisted of two lads laughing their heads off at the little critter writhing around after being hit by several gut shots, the more the suffering the greater the roars of laughter.

You got it redgum, the rabbits are not alarmed because they do not know we are there and sit still for us to take the shot.

As for the video clips that is a poor example mate a man of your experience knows that there are muppets out there posting clips with every type of firearm.

Of course it's pest control! The rabbits are shot as they are pests, who gives a toss how far away so long as they are killed clean. Putting rabbit on the dinner plate is a part of shooting them, but if food is your primary reason for the kill, that's sport rather than pest control, where the object is no more rabbits.

Seriously, farmers don't care if their rabbits explode into a thousand bits or kick like nobody's business after an air rifle pellet to the head. Dead is dead!

Harnser, your opinion is perfectly valid. For me, the thrill is the marksmanship, the cold bore shot, safe in the knowledge I worked hard at my prep work before the shot. Long range rsbbits are satisfying, they fall over before you ever hear the hit, and it's a good feeling.

I went out with a guy once, and he was shooting rabbits at 300 yards with a 22-250. This was in the days before range finders and such.

He had then what was the best kit money could buy - Sako Varmint and Zeiss high mag scope etc.

Now this guy said that he didn't mind if the rabbits were blown to bits, and he left them for the crows and foxes.

He shot 40 - odd rabbits and left the mangled remains for all to see.

The downside to his argument was that Joe Public, on average, doesn't like to see mangled remains of bunnies left about the place.

Whether we like it or not we have to consider Joe Public. Newpaper articles about shooters blowing rabbits to bits for fun (and that is how Joe sees it) and leaving the remains for children to find them will not go down well.

It's all about consideration for how others will see us.

Just imagine if farmers left dead cows and sheep lying about the place....

And while the can is being rattled, what about the safety side, you could easily be shooting over picnicers and those who work on the land without knowing it.The rabbits round vermincinators way must be quite differant to those round here, they feed and hop around nicely when undisturbed and politely sit up when they sense me so I can get a good shot. Enough of pulling the topic to pieces, in my view long range varmint shooting is not necessary, unsafe, inhumane and generally a bad practice and thats just my opinion but as individuals our sense of pleasure is gonna be differant other wise the wife would never have stayed with me this long.
