.philmypower.
Hi guys I have the opportunity of buying a 10g shotgun at a very good price but my question to you is if I was to buy it would I find it difficult to buy ammo. Thanks

Scully
As most 10bores are used for 'fowling,I think they mostly use home-loads,which is much more economical, depending on the amount of use you would get out of it,to make the initial 'set-up' costs worthwhile. The alternative could be the 3 1/2 inch magnum in 12 bore.
.philmypower.
I would realistically be using it 3-4 times a year on the geese, not really got the time to load my own as I load my own bullets and get ear ache off the wife every time I do it, apparently I spend too much time shooting  Only toying with the idea just didn't want to buy it and never be able to get my hands on any carts
Scully
There's an article in the current 'sporting gun' about the 10v12,and the various cartridges available for both re' geese, which may be of interest to you. When I hand-loaded for various weapons,we all chipped in together for the various presses, dies etc, which spread the set-up costs.
HDAV
How many carts year would you shoot? for a guide on prices JOhn Forsey has a wide stock http://www.johnforsey.co.uk/ammunition.html Remmington sportsman steel are £8 a box more for 10 bore than 3.5" 12bore but if you only shoot a box a season it might be worth it. However for remmington Nitro steel its only a couple of £ difference, I am sure there are more cart options out there, but a 3.5" chambered 12 bore either O/U or semi would be more versatile

If your looking at tungsten matrix then there going to be £2-£3 a bang but then if your not useing it alot it's not going to break the bank !!! If I ever went fowling I'd want one! It's not like you're going to shoot it a lot, so go out and invest a days wages in a couple of boxes of decent cartridges and they'll last you several seasons! The old 10 has so much character so forget the cost and buy it!

Scully
One of the Solway 'fowlers had a 10 bor e'fowler on show at Lowther a lot of years ago.Loads of wear on it but all the better for it.Great piece of kit.
Vince Green
Most ordinary gunshops don't stock 10 bores so supply will be a problem unless you live in an area like norfolk.
Guest cookoff013
with the new era of nontoxic shot. companys are making a lead like repalcement. mainly for the 20,28,410 where steel shot isnt compatable. if steel shells did come out for the sub bores the shot size would be so limited. like 9 shot maximum for 28 gauge. just like 6 is the maximum size for 20 gauge.... check the cip regs. its all there ! as these new nontoxics are more available as loose shot and factory, ammunition isnt too bad a problem. the 10gauge will always be more efficient than a 3.5" 12gauge. better speeds, lower pressures. scolopax
Remember if you were to use steel or any of the other hard non toxic shot then you are advised to use less than half choke. I was buying Remington Steel sheels at £25 a box, excellent on duck. I homeloaded Hevi shot for the geese and it was deadly, but it was also hard to hit anything sub 30 yards. Peathag
I would get in touch with Alan Myers (gunsmith - Lancashire) who kinda specialises in the larger bores and one phone call should sort things out as less people stock the big stuff these days. Haven't shot a ten in years - what make is it?
