PB Day for me

It's been a bit hit and miss for me on the woodies this year. Very little wheat cut yet so it's all been Rape and a bit of Barley. Had a couple of 20ish bags but also a few where I havent fired a shot. When I had a call from Fluffy on here saying the farm was covered in pigeons - I was busy at work but made a last minute call, rescheduled and met at the farm for 9am this morning.

I was dropped off on a disced rape field and set up on a small outcrop of ferns with a wood behind me. Deeks went out in a hockey stick shape to allow a good landing zone with the right to left cross wind. MY first error was leaving all my hide poles and bouncer rods in the car - bu##er!

I bodged a makeshift hide from the only branches I could find - which were far from ideal. I was assured this was a top spot but after 30 mins I hadnt even seen a bird I was doubtful - it all felt wrong, a **** hide, no movement in the pattern and I was set up in a dip with the deeks above my eyeline - not how I like it.

I had a bird land in the pattern after an hour but I was up the hedge on the phone and then another 2 shortly after whilst I held the hide together - were things looking up? I had a call from Steff asking if I wanted to move, but decided to give it another 30 mins - and boy was I glad I did!

Steadily the birds began to come in, just the odd one at first, but then pretty much a steady stream from 10am through to 3pm - with a real hectic flurry around midday where I couldnt load fast enough! I missed some silly easy birds, but also hot some real high screamers, all in all it was a superb days sport. The hide still wasnt great so I spent a good half and hour in the woods and managed to find 4 green Elderberry branches which improved the hide no end.

I didnt leave any birds in the pattern due to the heat so all the birds came to 12 shell deeks just sat on the ground - not even any spring sticks. Ive also been having issues with my Escort not cycling and it's been on the verge of being traded in as much as I love it - but today with 70mm Clear Pigeons it was faultless.

Anyway - ended up bang on 50 birds for 107 shells - so pretty much 1:2 ratio - happy with that. Picked 44 birds, lost 6 in the woods and bracken behind which Mags later found. So a PB for me by a long way - low 20's has been my previous best!

I'll remember today for a while to come!
