southrop
With a view to trying to mobilize market force to encourage ground owners to reduce prices. Tell us what you pay for 100 ESP Reg competitions? Ground name, price for comp, price for birds only and high gun payout?

Chard
I shoot registered ESP at Catton Hall, Fauxdegla, Kingsley Moor, Shugborough, Manchester, NOECTC, Doveridge, Kegworth, Grimsthorpe, Hodnet, occasionally others. Competition entry varies between £30 and £36, Birds Only is usually £5 or £6 less. High gun usually £100 to £125. It's the Class placings that are **** Most of these grounds pay out between £30 and £50 for 1st in Class, then £15 - £25 for 2nd and a tenner of so for 3rd, assuming they actually pay down to 3rd. So, you barely get your entry money back, let alone travelling costs and cartridges, unless you're High Gun. I still enjoy it though, so I suppose I'll just keep doing it. Diceman
Southrop, why do you think we are being overcharged? Traps / Trap maintenance Grounds & Buildings Maintenance Staff Clays Rent Tax Insurance etc etc All add up and having run a strawbaler I can tell you that none of the shooting grounds will be making their owners into millionaires any time soon. If they pocket more than £3 or £4 per gun I'd be very surprised.
southrop
I don't necessarily think we are Diceman, just interested to see the spread of prices and whether there is any regional bias. I do think £37 for a 100 esp open is pushing it though. On the other hand we do see an increasing number of birds only entries, that in itself suggests that the competition prices are becoming unaffordable for some which inevitably has an impact on the class payouts for competition entry, a bit of a viscious circle? People shoot b/o usually because they know that there is not a chance that they will win any money back and don't see the point of paying extra if they don't have to. I can see why the top shots and the sandbaggers like everyone to contribute to their costs, but why would anyone voluntarily pay a premium to subsidise somebody else's day out? As far as I am aware this doesn't happen in any other amateur sport, why should clays be any different?
EdSolomons
High gun, which is what the top lads are interested in, is not subsidised by lower classes, it is put up by the ground. Prize money stays in class so you are only paying into your own prize fund! Ed

As far as I am aware this doesn't happen in any other amateur sport, why should clays be any different? Actually they do, not just in sport but life in general. Our TV licence for instance would cost a bit less if the General Director didn`t think he was worth £2.5 million per annum, footballers money and the obscene sums earnt by the hangers on in that kind of sport have to be paid for from our pockets. I once visited a golf shop and was shocked by the ridiculous prices, I know where the sponsors get the money now to pay telephone numbers prizes to the lucky few. stevewall968
I agree with Diceman. The only competitions that I will pay extra for are Registered ones. All of the others seem to contain loads of Sandbaggers and unbelieveably high class winning scores until you start getting into the A and above classes. At least with the Registered shoots, there is some degree of control applied by the CPSA. Just my 2cents...
