monkeyboots
do many of yous shoot flighting woodcock , the reason i ask was talking to a few shooters a few weeks ago and the subject of woodcock came up personaly whilst rough shooting i shoot no more than 6 in a day , i mentioned 1 day last year that whilst i was standing on the edge of woodland shooting crows on a flight path as it was getting dusky when there was dozens of woodcock flighting out of the woods i shot a couple but these orther shooters where not amused at this type of shooting and said woodcock should be shot only while rough shooting being flushed by dogs,so was just wondering if any one shoots woodcock in this way i must say that they proved testing shooting that evening although i only shot 2 i must of missed about 6 but it was excting shooting

Think the article was in Shooting Times but might have been another magazine.

It,s not considered sporting at all, especially since they are flying much slower . As said , Woodcock should only be shot while rough shooting over dogs . Dr D
yep, monkeyboots. I shoot flighting and great fun it is too Anyone who thinks this is not sporting ought to try it when there is a bit of breeze. sometimes you need to give them impossible amounts of lead to connect and they would test the best. Roll on the end of November.

scolopax
Aye the same kind of folk who shoot flighting woodcock probably use an auto to do so, to add insult to injury. Only half kidding, I was always told it was not the done thing to shoot them flighting.
woodcock1
I shoot woodcock flights about half a dozen times a year only visiting the same place once or twice. I would consider myself a better than average shot at woodcock during the day averaging about 80% ratio. Shooting woodcock at dusk this drops to maybe 40% yet I have no problem shooting ducks at dusk. I find woodcock incredibly difficult to shoot flighting. Maybe its just the terrain Im on? They are much easier during the day in my opinion.
