beretta
you wont get a good quallity one for that price unless you get lucky on a car boot. cheap ones only last a short time before the gears give in, you get what you pay for. Blunderbust
LC, I have been sea fishing for well over 40 years and have to agree with what has been said about the longevity of cheap reels. They just don’t last and will die on you just when you have a decent fish on. Out of the ones you mentioned I would go for the Shimano. I have one of the Greys reels mentioned in amongst my vast collection, at that price they are great value and if you look after them they will last you for ever. I hope you find what you are looking for and that once the weather gets a bit colder you will get out and bag some of the winter Cod, if they appear this year. Tight lines mate. fat_jay
You would pick up shimano airlex or even the old original biomasters for the right price, I still use gt biomasters on me pike rods
JR1960
Go and have a look in Lathams or Pownalls they usually have some half decent budget fixed spools and they often have end of line cheapies in the shop if you drop lucky. Plenty of whiting about at the moment, got 19 and a decent dab in the harbour at yarmouth last weekend on the last couple of hours of the flood tide. Dibs
For £30 if you want quality I would go secondhand. Have a look on e bay. I would go for an older Daiwa Emblem S 5000H /5500H or a Shimano Aerlex or biomaster. You wont go wrong with any of these if they have been well looked after. If you want new then I havent seen these in the flesh but they have a two year warranty and look alright. http://www.britnett-carveradv.co.uk/ericsangling/prods/mitchell-avospod-reel-rrp-5999-ours-2999.html I have beach, carp fished and ran a specialist tackle shop for a while many years ago and you definately get what you pay for. - Shimano and Daiwa are always a sound bet. fenboy
As has already been said the beach is a grave yard for "cheap reels " they will fall apart very quickly. I use multiplyers but when I used fixed spool I had a couple of okuma distance surf 80 reels which my father now used look on ebay if your quick someone doing them 47.50 with free p+p I can recommmend them as a very very good reel for that price RRP is about £80 from memory ,very good line lay and very smooth and more important a proper beach reel rather than a freshwater big pit. As for the one suggested in this link ,save your money I had one for a spod reel and sold it after using it once it was total pants and in no way would be a long liver on the beach. englishman-in-wales
I dont use fixed spool, but if i did, i would use Penn Surfmaster 750's £50 brand new, an excellent reel for the money, my brother uses the 850 model and he swears by them!! Do a search on any of the sea forums and there are a awful lot of people who would disagree! lots of problems with them siezing up plastic bits breaking etc etc ,was going to get some myself once and it put me off , thats when i decided on the Okuma . fenboy
A reply pinched from a well known sea fishing forum on the question "how good is the penn surfmaster ". How good? RUBBISH!! Price? Too much even if it was free. Or they offered you money to have one. __________________ I rest my case avoid like the plauge
hambone
Have a look on the 'bay' for a used shimano aerlex 8000, try to get one that has been a spod reel (any freshwater) as it will not have had the beasting that sea reels get. BerettaSV10
When I started fishing bought cheap reels to see if I liked it, these fell apart even after the first trip out, they just can't stand the use they get. I am not up to speed on current reels but Shimano have had a good reputaion, as I ended up going boat fishing I used Diawa reels and they still are in as new condition after several years of use. fenboy
If you go for a emcast then look for the emcast sport (the red one) as its has a corrosion resistant spool for salt water where as the others models dont.
