onefulham
Misses has one and loves it so much got her Mum and son one, she was also told of a site, bit like napster for free books, got years and years worth of free books now, she used to work for the police but gone bad since she left ! humperdingle
My missus has got one, and she loves it... Got 4000 books on a DVD off fleabay, so there's plenty to keep her busy. Good thing about them is, you can pre-order a book, and it will be electronically delivered to your kindle as soon as it's out. Prices for new books aren't much cheaper than paper versions, but the older or out of print books can be had for nowt. She has last year's edition of the reader, but my daughter is getting the newest one for Christmas... Very neat little unit. I've heard of a couple of people having problems with the Kindle stopping working, but Amazon react very quickly if you contact them about it - Usually have a replacement in 1 or 2 days! Battery life is something like 30 days of use on a charge!!
onefulham
The trouble is its not easy to get free book site it's not straight forward, gotta go via Firefox and install program's and follow pages of instructions, I leave anything like that to the Misses, but it saves her a fortune in books so she loves it. Spiderdude
One of the simplest, most reliable, cost effective gadgets on the market. My wife, my 8 year old son and I all use it and have seperate book collections in it. Happy to pay for the books via Amazon as don't approve of dodgy website. As mentioned latest books are paperback price, older ones are cheaper to free. Edited December 8, 2011 by Spiderdude
UKPoacher
My wife loves hers and I've since bought three more as gifts and got one myself. You can find free books on Amazon or using Calibre. Both are easy and safe to use. Or search fleabay for DVDs holding thousands of books. Little wife has the original version whilst I have the newer smaller version. I prefer mine as it is more compact. I also got the larger one for an old friend who's eyesight isn't the good. That is a bit unwieldly compared to the others. You can buy them at larger Tesco styores, but don't get your cover from Amazon or Tesco as eBay is much cheaper. Wesman
I've got the Mrs one for christmas. I'm gonna have a look for the book DVD's on ebay now. Thanks again PW for saving me a fortune
nimms
The wife has the larger one and she bought me the smaller one for my birthday. The smaller one is cheaper but does not have a mains charger which they wanted £23 for, or £2.50 posted from fleabay. Also they keep the page you are on great when you fall asleep. Chris B123
This might be a strange question, but do you need a light on to read them in bed? Thanks Chris.
Fuji Shooter
My Mrs has had one for ages - amazes me how long the batteries last between charges. Wish my phone worked like that. Just a shame you have to pay VAT on the books as it makes the difference in price not that great when you consider you can't sell it on or give it away. Amazon sell a leather case with an inbuilt LED, expensive but looks good. Be aware that if you do get a case, there ate some on the market that are really **** and fit badly, I learnt this quickly. Ended up buying the genuine Amazon Kindle case, too quality.

DSPUK
Once you buy a book is it kept on the kindle or is it on your computer - can you read it again if you want to - could someone explain basically how they work please. PaulABF
I got one at the beginning of the year. I read it every day and do about 3 books a week. I've only ever paid for one book from Amazon,as everything is available for free if you know where to look. Quite simply one of the best things I own. UKPoacher
I have five Kindles registered to my account. If I buy a book or download a free book from Amazon we can all read it. Michael and Eric can download books using the Wi-Fi when they are at home in France or on holiday in Cyprus, Australia or wherever. The book stays in my list until I choose to remove it so I can reload it to a Kindle if it has been erased from the Kindle by mistake. I can't send the books to any other person though. Only those registered on my account can read them. Books you buy on DVD or download from Calibre can be loaded to anyone's Kindle.
WelshLamb
I think, I'd rather just go and buy the book! Books dont go 'flat' just as you get to the good part!

Dave It's on your kindle. I keep a folder on my computer with copies of all the books I download in.mobi format which is the file that kindle uses. You can 'open' your kindle like a normal file on your computer once it's connected and drag and drop as normal. Piece of cake mate. All you need is Calibre to convert other filetypes, ,pdf, lit etc to kindle speak - .mobi and you're away. These sites are good for free books: mobibookz free book spot

And the Kindle takes up no room or weight in your suitcase - unlike books. It also lasts three to four weeks between charges and has a battery monitor to keep you informed of the charge. Do you walk everywhere so that you don't run out of fuel at inconvenient times? Do you grow all your own food so that you never run out? Do you walk round naked to stop your clothes wearing out? Wake up. Smell the coffee.
Cottonseed
Wake up. Smell the coffee. Yep! I'm a technophobe. It took me years to get a computer, I could never ever set a video recorder (thank God they're obsolete now!) and I scorned the Kindle--'til my wife got me one for my birthday in July. It's one of the best things I've ever had. No more taking a suitcase full of books on holiday to dump. No more being stuck on a train, or somewhere with nowt to read. Brilliant to read in bed with the LED light. ******* brilliant invention!
Hornet 6
I can't send the books to any other person though. Only those registered on my account can read them. Books you buy on DVD or download from Calibre can be loaded to anyone's Kindle. Using Calibre you can save bought books to your computer, and then send them by e-mail to anybody you like. Neil.
