Nice Wee Boxing Day Walk And Duck Flight.

Headed oot for the Boxing Day walk with Mac and Rab with the weather very mild at 15 degrees but blowing the usual gale.Left it latish so we could head straight from there to the duck splash hoping for a duck or two.Mac had the 410 and i had the Browning and the plan was for me to shoot the less predictable bits and Mac to get the pieces where we know the pheasants are usually a shoe in.Started off well with a cock and hen from the first bit,so then concentrated on Mac getting a shot or two.Unfortunately they were not obliging and with a mix of the wind and Mac being slow mounting i had another 3 withoot him only getting one shot off but nay downing the bird.We had only about 200 yards left from probably a 3 mile walk when a cock that Rab had missed rose about 10 yards behind us.I turned to tell Mac to get on him when he fired and the bird dropped. He was a runner but Rab took him about 50 yards up the ditch so we were delighted.Again the wind wasnt helping but hes a touch slow mounting but will get there.

Then took a bag of barley to the splash but since we havent been there since the frost,we didnt know if it was still being used.Signs were not that good with barley still on the margins although there were a few feather blown to the side. There is hardly any cover at all now,but with it being pretty dark the birds dont seem to see us so we just kneel and wait.Only been oot about 5 minutes when 5 mallard came over and with Mac squeabless in the 410 i let them land and told him to load up.When he was ready i stood up and flushed the ducks but Mac fluffed with both barrels. For the next 10 minutes an outstanding flight happened with a superb number of mostly mallard but with the odd lot of widgeon. The plan was for Mac to fire first and hopefully get the easier chances and then me batter away but although he did miss a couple he should have dropped he was struggling to get on them in the dark.We had 4 down when a about a dozen came sliding in low from the right,so told Mac to pick a bird and try it.On his shot i watched one peel off but i lost it in the dark after a couple of hundred yards and doubted if it had came down. The next lot i fired and again i watched one head in the same direction as the other pricked but this one looked ****** so i marked it and thought id go over to try and find them straight away.I was oot the ditch when Mac said he heard some coming and right enough a pair came in with the paddles down and the two shots resulted in a pair down.I told Mac to sort oot the ducks that were handy and took Rab away to try the others. We walked aboot 200 yards and then put Rab in the direction of the first one,and he took off in another direction and went another 200ish yards.I presumed he was onto a rabbit but kept the torch on him and after a few minutes he came trotting back with Macs mallard duck which was a relief.I thought the other would have been dead but she was in the ditch and gave Rab a nightmare by diving whenever he was close but he eventually got her which made 8 and an outstanding finish to the day with Mac having a pheasant and a duck.Rab is recovering from an op so was held back a good bit as he was wanting to do his usual shift so a lot of birds probably sat tight and were missed.

Well done Dave, Mac and Rab :good: :good: Excellent write up and pics. I dare say that Mac will be an outstanding shot in the near future. Having opportunities like that at a young age is a great teacher and the mounting will come with more practice. Looking forward to seeing him progress. Rab crossing the fence bird in mouth was a great shot!!

Well done Dave,Mac and Rab!

Good lad Mac for getting your Pheasant and Mallard!

Cracking write-up and pics!

Cheers Mark.Hes a wee bit slow mounting but hes spot on with both rifle and shotgun so hopefully he will carry on.There must have been about 100 ducks come in altogether and i think he was a wee bit confused at times on picking a bird.

Top stuff Dave, end of December and in shirt sleeves, lol :good:

Unbelieveable Andy.It was 15 when we went oot and it didnt get that chilly till about 1500 even woth the wind.Prefer shooting without too much kit on so it was spot on fella.

Well done mate! nice day had, Have a fantastic new year. :good:

Cheers Alex.Superb day enjoyed by all. Will have a top new year and hope likewise fella.

Hi Timothy, and heres hoping your right about his shooting skills but obviously when he wipes my eye he can buy his own kit and cartridges. ;) I think the younger they learn the better especially handling and safety of the tool they are using so it becomes second nature.Rab still has 5 stitches in the side of his heed so he was on a short leash but he still wanted to work his usual 110%.

Hiya,

good writeup, pictures and good result... thanks for sharing :good:

Cheers fella, and glad you enjoyed them.

Another great read and pics :good:

Cheers again fella, glad you enjoy it.

Nice photos mate, short sleeves in dec? Its the same here mild as hell

Cheers John.We were minus 7 last week and plus 15 today.Hardly seasonal but the wildlife will be enjoying it compared to the last couple of Xmas.

Well done to all concerned especially Mac. Cracking looking pheasants, really well feathered!

Cheers fella.Birds in good nick all round.Havent noticed many Woodcock around lately and maybe a wee bit of harder weather would show them better

Well done and great pictures - nice to see your son is so keen.

If you don't mind me asking what gloves are you wearing to shoot? I suffer badly with arthritis in my hands and I am having a problem finding gloves that I can shoot in, feel the trigger, load cartridges etc.

Thanks for that fella. The gloves are Harkila Pro Shooters and imo are spot on.Plenty of feel and still keep the hands cosy.
