WelshLamb
Thread update at the request of Dr Evil!! Got loads done in last few days, engine and gearbox are now back in. The gearbox was bolted into exactly the same place, had alter the gear stick so it didn't hit the dash when in 1st/3rd/5th gear, as slightly longer gearbox means the sticks are further forward. This also means I'll have to make a new tranny tunnel . Handbrake cable was connected back up, new clutch master cylinder put on and connected up. Because of the longer gearbox/bellhousing, the engine mounts had to be shifted forwards 4" or so, so new mounts were fabricated up and welded in. The power steering pump is also now fitted and connected up! Fuel filter and fuel pump are fitted, wired in and fuel lines and fuel return from carbs are on... (Not that I'm expecting much fuel 'return' with a V8 to feed and a chronically heavy right foot ) Need to get a T-Piece tomorrow so a single fuel line can be split to feed both carbs . Next job is wire up the alternator & starter motor, and work out which bits of the now redundant loom plugs correspond to water temp/oil pressure etc. Have had to move the alternator to a new position higher up, as the power steering pump was in the way for it to be left in its old position. Have taken the sills off ready to fit the new sliders when they arrive. Total spend tally so far!! Carried forward: £814 2x engine mounts - £7.13 8x Bolts to bolt engine & box together - £6.53 8x Spark plugs, oil filter, exhaust 'Y' pipe, centre exhaust box, exhaust olive, new water hoses, radius arm bushes - £100 Hose clips, 20A switch for fuel pump, fuel pipe - £55 1 gallon EP90 gear oil - £15 2 Gallons engine oil £36 TOTAL: £1068.66 A few pics... [Edits due my new found inability to spell ] Engine and box bolted to gether ready to go in - ooerrr mrs, its huge!! And bolted in place with new engine mounts made up Power steering pump is on! Test fitting the rad Sills removed! Ever faithful hound Edited January 17, 2012 by WelshLamb

sandspider
Good thread, love the V8 soundtrack. However, in keeping with the thread title, I think we need some pics of you working on the beast... sandspider
Elf n' safety wouldn't allow it mate - nowadays the suspenders have to be just above the knee, to avoid getting caught on the wing when sitting like that!
WelshLamb
Got more done again today! All the fuel lines were put on, fitted the exhaust system (only the centre box, then a flexi pipe to a side exit exhaust ) Put his Shrek ears on (K&N induction cones) , fitted the rad, made sure everything was water and fuel tight What a mess! Shrek ears Bling bling 'Zorst! Petrol filter & pump out the engine bay and away from the heat! Everything in place, ust before attempting to fire her up Will she fire? http://youtu.be/Ws3T3ghaNUY Edited January 19, 2012 by WelshLamb

cockercas
i dont know if its relevant or not but, when i was younger and fitted k&n i always made a shield and cold air feed to go around it, otherwise it sucks in hot air and hot air is not as dense as cold air, so less performance. this was on 'hot hatches' not landrovers tho
WelshLamb
Well she's all back together idles nicely, but splutters like mad when up to temp and driven. Think the carbs need tuning/balancing, but I have absolutely no idea how to do it . Its definitely fuel starvation... she drives nicely with the choke pulled right out If its not the carbs, I'm second guessing that the fuel pump isnt strong enough to feed all those cylinders. Currently using one off an old ford V6. Oh and the alternator is furbar'd gonna swap it tomorrow for a working one! Current spend total is something like £1300 . Will update when Ive got the receipts in my hand tomorrow
handy4454
The KN's are a lot less restrictive than the original airbox and paper element filters so will allow more air through giving you a weaker mixture,do you still have the old airboxes to put back and compare? Would suggest that the Ford pump is up to the job as you say it drives well on choke,if the pump was'nt up to it you would not get the delivery to provide enough fuel to run on choke. SU carbs are not difficult to set up but you need to find a mate with hands on experience its not something you can be talked through easily anyone whos played about with Jags or Rovers should be able to put you right atb handy
WelshLamb
handy thats a v.good point After a whole weeks worth of constant spannering, I'm all Land Rover'ed right out !! Just talking to Dr_Evil on here and he agrees with you that its probably the fuel that needs adjusting. I'll try turning the fuel up a bit tomorrow and have it run a little richer I dont have the original filter box to compare it
fenboy
When I saw this thread title I thought it would be something that needed a battery > > > > > > > But not a landrover
WelshLamb
Well if you're gonna have power, you just as well have plenty of it
Dr_evil
I only supplied the engines with the K&N's and a snorkel box…….I will add that upon cleaning and re-oiling the K&N's there was a lot of grime removed so they are working as good as new or should be according to them If its spluttering with no choke out slowly adjust the carbs until it stops (try to get it even so both sides have the approximate same amount of mix) and that should do it, if not then I can supply a high performance fuel pump if need be
handy4454
From memory I'm pretty sure that the Haynes manual for 3.8 and 4.2 Jaguar E Types had a decent section on carb adjustment and balancing,if you're totally spannered out browsing through that with a glass of something could be time well spent, keep up the good work! atb handy

Loved that car...... Have a look at some of the Classic car mags with Rover V8s in them.

Laird Lugton
I'd quite like an ex mil one but wouldn't be able to tell if it's rotten.....a mate reckons I should buy a galvanised chassis on ebay and then buy a donor vehicle to rebuild it. However that could become a long term project in the garage that never gets finished.......
