Gallser
Currently in Texas and due to return to UK in next couple of days. Visited a sports shop today and they are selling off a Leupold vx2 3-9 x 50 scope for $299 (approx £200)and a Leupold vx2 3-9 x 40 for $260 (approx £175). Was looking for a new scope for my 22.250 and looking for opinions. All help gratefully appreciated.

casts_by_fly
I have a 3-9x40 vari-x 2 from 1980 or so on my 30-06 and its never missed a beat. They are very good scopes if they are the right magnification for you. On a 22-250 I'd want a bit more magnification, but if you want it for fox then that would be a great combo. I'd suggest the x50. Thanks Rick
scotland rifles
get a VX 111 if you can, the glass from then on up is even better, sadly i can't get on with them now since i now use glasses, but prior to beeing a 4 eyes i loved them, bob. also check out leica scopes also stunning as well as zeiss (i would have a zeiss over all the big scopes now, i have 2 and love them to bits,)
garyb
Keep your money in your pocket... Leupold scopes simply don't have the clarity of European glass.. besides the mag is a little on the small side for a 200 yard centrefire IMHO. I've had a VX2 and a VX3 in the past, and I sold them on very quickly as they simply don't compare to the likes of Meopta, S&B or Swarovski. Agree with this man 100% I have followed the same path - and ended up after lots of money spent with an S&B, really isnt a comparison. My Leupold was a VX2 and I sold it on with in weeks, just didnt work for Me.
garyb
I can see their use on Airguns and rimfires out to 50-60 yards. But there are much better offerings on the market more suited to the calibre the OP mentioned.
bullet boy
Leupold scopes are good.I like the VX3 range but personally i'm a S&B fan and IMO Schmidts are better glass than the Leupold ones. ATB.
Catweazle
It's nice to talk about Swaros and the like, but look at the prices in the original post. £175 does not get you a S&B. I think Leupolds are good for the money, they don't claim to be Swaros but they're a lot cheaper. I have two VXIII 50mm Long Range Target, they've been excellent, especially as bought used - one was £300 the other £400. I bet you can find a used Leupold in the USA for a very, very good price. Oly
See how much their Bushnell 6500 Elite go for...brilliant glass, and superbly versatile mags too. Ditched my top of the range VXIII for one a few years ago and have not looked back! The Bushnell Elite 6500 2.5-16x42 mildot ones are £489 over here. Catweazle
Here's an often quoted chart based on some US tests, I think on SnipersHide website.
