Slipster
I am thinking (lots of thinking)of getting an ESS and would prefare a bitch, I am hoping to train her to retrieve and general rough shooting. Can any ESS owners give me any pointers on what to look for in a pup and also the Dam and Sire Many thanks Slipster

old rooster
Yes, hers some great advice. DON'T DO IT I'm not convinced that you need a dog with a pedigree a yard long that's full of Field Trials champs for a normal working dog. Seen a few of these gems in action and you've got to be on top of them all the time. I chose mine as I wanted a reasonable little bitch to do just what you are at by the sounds of it. Might be worth getting oine of the springer books to check on physical features to look out for but I'm not sure that they are well enough developed in a puppy to see properly. Read the book and check the Sire and Dam for compliance.
Slipster
Rooster/Henry Done some reading and found some good info on the net, Looked at a litter of 9 yesterday with my missus and wanted to keep them all Have put a deposite on a small bitch(refundable if i change my mind, as she is only 5 weeks old) Spent a good long time with all the dogs including the Dam & Sire who where both really good natured, In the end i chose the one i liked best and know all i have to do is find her a name. My JRTs are called Scrap, Charlie, Mia, Pippa and Penny any ideas for my Springer would be appreciated. Will post pics as soon as she can come home

rarms
>English Springer, What to look for?? As an ESS owner of 9 weeks last weekend I would have said get a Labrador, now however after spending a week away with her I reckon a springer was a good choice. Slipster
RARMS I did own a Lab many years ago, a lovely dog and so obedient but i like the (dare i say) unpredictableness (if thats a word)of the ESS and the shear excitement. I woiuld think she wil fit in well with the Jack,s Glad you made the right choice

MC
Thistle is a good name, I like that. Mine is called Merlin, firstly after the engine that powered the spitfire(my favourite plane) and second his dad's kennel name is magician of wickham. I would not consider another dog other than a springer. In a few short months of obedience and gundog training he has transformed from a real live wire, into everything to a well behaved dog who is calm and almost does everything he is asked. He is steady to the gun and retrieves OK so what more do you want. He does hint well if there is a scent around, but loses interest if you take him on a playing field or just in long grass. I have no intention of trialling him anyway. You won't go wrong with some good advice, NTTF is a good place to start. Get her socialised and don't rush it and she will turn out a good dog. Cheers and best of luck Martin

MC
Slipster, I take back everything I have said, Merlin was an absolute nightmare last night, He wouldn't even sit when told let alone anything else. We are meant to be running in a working test on the 23rd july, somehow I think less than no chance at the moment I could quite easily given him to the first person I saw. We will try again tonight Cheers Martin

MC
EVERYTHING is the answer to that. When I cast him off to hunt he runs away. If I ask him to sit he runs away. When I throw a dummy he runs away. When I recall him he runs away. Can you see a pettern forming? Seriously though he has been good and it was an off day. It was very hot and I didn't expect much from him. We are running in the gundog club novice test on sunday so I will let you know how we get on. He has been doing really well apart from his hunting, he has become aware that the dummy will be thrown when the gun is fired so he keeps stopping and watching the gun. Cheers Martin
