hi lads, i have shot rabbits a few years now with a cz 452 22, i am normally on target up to close to the 100yd mark, at that distance the 68 year old eyes have to be looking through 12 magnification. my question is when shooters are taking stuff out to 250yds with say hmr 17, what mag scopes are they using

I try not to go over x9 mag as whatever x's mag you place on the scope you will have the same in shooter error. There is a lot of pooh spoken about long range shots......I'm not saying that some shooters are not very good at it! I am purely saying that some people can get carried away with distance when recalling a shot.

Then again you should never let the truth get in the way of a good story....

its probably my eyes, and i dont have an expensive scope. i have scoped a rabbit at what i have judged 200yd, all i am seeing is a rabbit, even with the right calibre, there is no way i could say i was going to put one behind the eye or behind the shoulder, please dont get me wrong, i am not questioning the long range shots, merely asking how much of the scope is the rabbit filling. thanks for your input so far :good:

I prefer really flat shooting rounds such as the .17 centre fire because all the way out to around 450 yards you can still hit the head but only aim a tiny bit high using open sights. Obviously this is much harder to achieve with my .22 rimimie and subtonics so I halve the distance then. If using scopes then I rarely even leave the house at all.

If you are shooting rabbits at 100yds with a .22 you are doing OK anyway. I can do it but usually a lot closer than that (6x44 on mine)

Judging the hold over at that range is probably more of an issue than magnification.

As for the folk shooting rabbits in the next county, I often wonder how they saw them in the first place.

I remember asking my Dad "if the bullets in your .22 are dangerous within one mile, how come the iron sights only go up to 200yds?"

"Because you can't see that far"

what at load of ****

225 yard headshot on a rabbit with a 22 rf using open sights, you would be lucky to do 125

imho mate a 3-14x50 is all the scope you will ever need for hunting, x 14 mag is plenty, i never go above 9 mag on my 17hmr!

you use that 8x32x56ir for under 250yd shots then.

Yes,but i have it mounted back to front so im actually looking through the objective which puts a 200 yards shot in reality an 800 plus one.Nice and sporting.

not a lot of sense on here tonight, i am off to bed

I agree fella, too many folks not taking threads seriously.Im one of the few, very few in fact who will give a doon to earth answer with no **** taking.Dont let them get you doon fella, and hang in there.

I shoot at ranges that i am confident to kill the quarry, for example my Tikka 223 s&b 2.5-10x56 usually set on 8x mag 10 if struggling to identify the quarry my personal limit with this rifle is 200 meters at night, the rifle set up is more than capable of longer range than that in the right hands.

Have a look at YOU TUBE and do a search for SirSlotsAlot video's and you will be amazed at what some people can achieve.

To true, my max'd shot on rabbit with hmr was a lasered 146 yards.

I use a x12 (vari) on my hmr, but don't normally use that a higher mag, normally stays around x7-8, but that 'cos I don't choose the long shots in preference to an easy sitter.
