I see Frenchie's point, you make an effort to have your own avatar, then it get's nicked by someone that can't be bothered to make his own.

Mine is of an old bitch fox that looks like it's looking over a fence, it

has no teeth but loved killing poultry, the fence, the field, and the grazing sheep are mine. The view is looking accross a Welsh valley.

The fox is dead.

Everything is sorted now!

The chap got back to me and said that he could not remember where or how he got the avatar and did not realise that he should have checked about it before he started using it. He has appologised and stopped using the avatar so that is that and there are no problems between us.

Like I have said, I am not too worried about it but I just feel that if someone takes the time and effort to take reasonable quality photos and use them to create a personal avatar then it is nothing short of good manners to ask the designer or photographer for permission before anyone else just helps themselves and starts using it.

As it is I use it on my "Vermin Control" business cards too, which is what it was originally designed it for.

Que?

Why que? Simples.

Mark posted a picture of a ladder trap on PigeonWatch (either for sale or to show design I assume). A few days later, an advert appeared on Bay using this picture (without his consent). I am guessing he only posted the picture here...ergo, it was put on eBay by somebody on here.

Although personally, it could also quite easily have shown as a result in google and they may have got it that way.

For example, I google 'ladder trap' and went to 'images'. The first image is a ladder trap...from a post on pigeonwatch.

I wonder why some avatars show on my computer but not All on my iPhone ? Apple copyright police ? :)

Quite simple really - When browsing PW on an iPhone, it uses the uploaded photo rather than the avatar.

If you look at my avatar, whilst browsing the full site, it's the album cover for Miike Snow. If you browse on an iPhone, on the mobile skin, it's a photo of Troll Dad.

For anyone saying that if you put a photo on the internet, you're allowing it to be copied and stolen, you're very wrong. Getty images make loads and loads of money from people who steal their images.

I'm not 100% what they do, but I imagine it's something along the lines of this: The EXIF data of the image is impregnated with a piece of code which 'calls home' when it's used somewhere. So someone will pinch a Getty Images photo, say a footballer, to go on their football website - a few weeks later an invoice will land on the desk of the website owner, asking for the money for the image.

EDIT: Further investigation shows that Getty images uses PicScout to hunt down any stolen photos. http://www.picscout.com/

If you have a photo and wonder where else it's listed, you can use a reverse image search such as Google or Tineye http://www.tineye.com

Out of interest Frenchie, who 'designed' the one you are using now? (as in the fox, not the one with you and the BOP)

I photographed and designed the avatar that I am currently using and that is the avatar in question. (The fox in the crosshairs)

I photographed the fox on one of my permissions from a distance of less than 15 yards - I spent nearly an hour getting into position for the photo and was so close she heard the shutter on the camera. (this particular Vixen had 5 cubs at the time but they are no longer with us!)

In answer to "Crosshairs", Yes, I do have it on my "Vermin Control" business card, which is what I initially designed it for!

I don't see what all the fuss is about? :hmm:

Then being as you think you are so clever I suggest that you read this and make sure that you understand it:

http://www.photosecrets.com/photography-law-copyright

As I am the photographer and own the copyright to the photo and also the avatar and you clearly do not have permission from me to use it I will leave you to act accordingly and refrain from using that avatar any longer.

By putting any copyright markings of your own on it you are displaying a blatant disregard for and lack of knowledge of the law!

Corrrrrr does humor exist past Watford Gap or what?

At your request, I have changed it to another from my collection...

I trust this one is more suitable?
