any advice please,,,,

sent sgc app off,,had alarm fitted,,cabinate fitted,,locks on door to room fitted,,and i have just aqquired a top quality safe that will hold about 300 cartridges in,,its made from the same materials as my 3x shotgun cabinate,,it also has the same type of lock and key and is also crow bar resistant (as they say),, now for the question ??????? can i bolt this to the wall next to my cabinate that will house my shotguns which is stored inside a cupboard which is also locked,,the reason i ask is because i keep hearing conflicting views that you should not store your carts near to your gun,,but i have seen gun cabinates with a cartridge storage facility built in,,one of my buds said store them under a bed or in a cupboard somewhere,,surely they would be safer in a bolted to the wall safe just like my gun cabinate,,any advice or should i just ring the firearms dept up thanks all ,,,,,,evo :hmm:

Your best bet is to have a chat with your FEO when he comes around to have a chat and inspect your cabinet, from what you have described your security will be more than adequate. As for the shotgun cartridges there is no requirement to store them,it sounds daft, but just put them somewhere safe out of sight.

Way too much overkill!

I keep cartridges under the bed. Have a few on a shelf above the gun cabinet. No alarm, no lock on the door of the room the gun cabinets are in. Last count between us was 9 shotguns and 6 firearms (with open slots for 3 more).

jesus i havnt even got my gun yet but would like to think its best to be safe,,i just think it would be better to put in a safe than to leave them lying round in the same room or in the cupboard as for under the bed cant get nothing under it ,,its one of those beds that has about an inch in clearance,,and im at the age where the fireworks have gone out of the sex life   but dont tell the missus she still thinks half a minute is 10 mins :D :D

Security is a good thing but you seem to have gone into over kill mode. As previously stated there is no requirement for the cartridges to be locked away. The main thing is that the recommendation for the storage is a wooden container and not a metal safe or box. By putting cartridges in a box you will have effectively created a bomb. Should your house catch fire the cartridges will just burn in a wood box rather than explode.

Similar but more so.

Your security it more than enough, the FEO should be very happy, it doesn't have to be Fort Knox.

Don't worry about putting the cartridges in a safe next to the gun cabinet, do whatever is most convenient. Very few can lock them up at all due to the size and quantity of them, hence the majority of carts are under the bed/stacked on or next to the cabinet/in the car etc.

If I had to lock up all the cartridges I had in my possesion I'd be screwed, as I often buy a thousand for each of the guys I shoot with to get the bulk buy savings. Thus I can have 7/8000 at any time, I'd need another 3 gun cabinet to store that lot! They just live out of sight behind a closed door where casual visitors are unlikely to go. My FEO said this was fine.

Dont even have to lock up shotguns in France just large calibre centre fire rifles. But you do have to keep the cartridges in another room to the guns.

Sodit :yp:

I wish our Parliament would take a leaf from the French book of Firearms Laws, even if not with regards to storage. The French seem to have got thier heads around good Firearms legislation.

Dont ask the police the advice you get is generally over the top, ask your shooting org SACS/BASC if your not in one Join one because if you do hit a snag if you are not a member they Can't help. :good:

dont mention the alarm either to police or insurance company......unless you have some serious valuables in the place fine but as you get a discount for having the alarm fitted just rem this.....if anything ever happens and say you have just nipped out and not set said alarm guess what they are going to tell u and its not a requirment for firearms so dont give them any reason to give you hard time in future if anything did happen.....but seriously way over the top ;) ;)

Some FEO's might prefer you to have a alarm or even dummy alarm bell boxes. But as millrace says if declared you have a alarm to your insurance company and you forget to set it and some thing happens they can get funny, the same goes for locks on windows.

.

One thing worth looking into is adding your gun to your insurance as a named item, some companies may charge extra premium for this, though mine does not.
