Brad93
Hi all, picked up a new cabinet today deep enough to fit scoped rifles. One question, if i take my old cabinet out tomorrow, put the new one in (exactly the same place etc) and inform the FSEL Section with a simple phone call will that be fine or do I need to have them come and look at it?. cooter
I would put it in next to your existing one, if space allowed, then call the FLO. You can never have enough storage space for your gear.
Brad93
Looks like it is gonna be a call to the FEO. Space doesn't allow for them to be next to each other, and tbh i need to sell my old one to get some money back to go toward the sweet little HMR i saw in the shop yesterday
JonathanL
There is no need to inform them. J.

There are no such things as 'rules' for different forces. The law is the law and it's made by Parliament - not plod. If they put it as a condition to that effect on your cert then that's another matter but they don't (to my knowledge). We constantly bemoan things like the time it takes to get grants and vairiations but everyone seems to be all to wllling to let the police invent whatever rubbish they like to clog the system up with. The bloke who has to spend an hour visiting you and another hour doing whatever paperwork is invloved could be put to better use like doing the actual job of granting or varying tickets. If you don't tell the police that you have acquired another cabinet then what is going to happen abut the fact? Nothing, that's what. It is not an offence to fail to notify the police of the fact and certainly not a reason to pull your cert. As far as cabinets go there isn't even any requirement to have one at all. J. jimmyb79
When I upgraded mine to a bigger one, the FEO came round within half an hour and increased the amount of shotguns I could securely store at home. (Kent police) I don't know if you have to tell them or not, but it certainly can't hurt.
Brad93
Received a reply to my email today: "Your new cabinet can be sited where the old one was. However once in place in will need to be inspected by your local FEO. The inspection can take place as part of the Firearm Certificate application process. However if you do not think that you will be making an application in the coming months then please let me know and I will arrange for a FEO to visit you to check that the cabinet has been suitably installed." Frenchieboy
Sorry to disagree, BUT different forces MAY have different rules Lanc police want to be informed if you move/ put another cabinet in !!! just done it and am waiting for an inspection by Simon shaun I'm with Lancs and have just had exactly the same situation! I wanted to fit a new larger cabinet so to cover my back I phoned the office and had a chat to Peter Wilkinson (Who was my original FEO and a really great man who knows what is what, I can't speak highly enough of him) about the changover. What he said was that I should go ahead and fit the new cabinet and start using it straight away. As soon as I had finished fitting the new cabinet I should give him a call and he would send a memo to the FEO (A new FEO for me that replaces Simon) who "MIGHT" want to call round at some time to check it! I personally do not have a problem with this as I know that no-one could fault either the new cabinet or the fitting of it, and it would be "nice" to know and meet my new FEO so I know who I am "dealing with". (I believe my new FEO is a chap called Nigel) I guess that different areas might like to try to do things slightly differently but I can't understand why they should feel the need to - It's high time there was one set of rules right across the country rather than each different area doing things differently and no-one knowing exactly where they stand. Frenchieboy, I couldn't agree more. the OP is after advice and the annecdotal evidence is that what is considered acceptable varies in this issue from one police force to another ... I upgraded my cabinet a year or so ago( Greater Londson). I knew that the FEO had noted the original cabinet size on my last renewal visit andf i would soon have more guns on my ticket than that original cabinet could accomodate. I opted to contacted them by Email and telephone and put the onus on the FEO I correctly guessed that after i had written a chapter and verse email regarding my intention to upgrade my cabinet, the details of the cabinet (model details, BS compliance, fixing methods and details etc), which could go in the file, The FEO was happy that he did not need to inspect and we both have communications on file regarding it being accepted. I know that many people may suggest that the information I supplied was none of the FEO's business until renewal but i've nothing to hide and would rather have a file that shouts "conciencious" in case i ever want to push the envelope in terms of what i hold at some point. If you make it easy for people in authority to file a piece of paper to cover their backsides they generally make your life easier!
