Not wanting to hijack but on the side -

What about old PC processors? I've got three of the chuffing things that I'm too scared to chuck out. Whats the best way to destroy them completely / dispose of with peace of mind?

there isn't any data stored on the processors. just the hard drive,

Overwrite each bit of hard disk 7 or so times and you are safe (to MOD standard). It really does take an age though. If you're that bothered about giving your data away, it might be worth buying a new hard disk to put in there and use the original as a paperweight.

If you're not that bothered, just format and reinstall.

CPUs are volatile no no data remains once the computer switches off. Just chuck them ... Or put on eBay

Both have been used at work.

I might just smash up the oldest one and wipe the newer one and give it to my youngest.

Cheers chaps :good:

According to various tv programs it's impossible to completely wipe a hardrive of data, with the right person and equipment it can still be accessed

With the right program you can erase it completely. Once did a drive for a mate....even HMRC couldn't get anything back off it.

Avanquest data eraser.

Which bits the hard drive?

It is a well known fact that jizz has acidic qualities that will wipe old PC processors. Well, that's what I told the missus anyway!

I'd never fit them in my sock.

if you sell it put in a new / second hand hard drive and keep your old ones for portable caddys . its the only way to be sure that your stuff remains safe . simples . hard drive wipers only work to a degree . there are several firms who can retreave info from wiped and even smashed up disks .
