hedd-wyn
Hi folks Another question that's been bugging me. I was having a discussion the other day with a pal of mine about using bait in a feeder (that could be removed after shooting) to shoot vermin. Now I recall someone mentioning in an older post that baiting wood pigeons with feed was illegal is this true? It's fact that people use bait to lure magpies, fox and crows right? e.g dead rabbit, or lamb ect But would it be different with squirrel or wood pigeon? Could you use dried maize, seeds or nuts on them? Cheers Heddwch ******** I ment PESTS! Edited April 24, 2012 by hedd-wyn

fenboy
From my understanding it is illegal to feed wild birds to shoot them ,IE you cant put grain on a field to attract pigeon then shoot them , I guess the same applies to crows too. Vince Green
I believe its illegal to feed feral pigeons, certainly it is in London but whether thats National Law or just a By Law I don't know. Lots of people do
hedd-wyn
Yes is true you cant bait pigeons, encouraging them to feed on or around crops defeats the object of pest control This is what I thought, thanks mate..... But what about squirrels? I know of people who use hanging chicken feeders with nuts to lure them in then take them out one by one with an air rifle

fenboy
With squirrels you would be ok as they are a non native invasive species (not reds of course).
HW682
Yes is true you cant bait pigeons, encouraging them to feed on or around crops defeats the object of pest control But that is exactly what you do with decoys, isn't it? Is is not illegal to bait wood pigeons. I have this confirmed in writing by Natural England after a discussion on here a while ago. Basically, they have to be causing damage, and then you have to try non-lethal methods. After that you can kill them, take their eggs, destroy nests or whatever. It is a controversial subject because many don't consider it "sporting" or ethical to use food bait. The GL's aren't concerned with that though. It is just the same as using a rabbit as bait for crows etc.
Scully
you can use any dead animal to bait other pests/vermin but not live animals Don't think this is entirely correct. It is perfectly legal to use live Magpies in a Larsen trap to lure other Magpies, but according to the landowners on whose land we shoot, you are not allowed to use 'reared' stock(dead or alive)to lure anything. CharlieT
Don't think this is entirely correct. It is perfectly legal to use live Magpies in a Larsen trap to lure other Magpies, but according to the landowners on whose land we shoot, you are not allowed to use 'reared' stock(dead or alive)to lure anything. Although I do so, the reason is not because it's ilegal to bait vermin with dead farm stock but because it now infringes various DEFRA rules to dump dead stock on farms. washerboy
so using a ferret in an open topped wire rabbit run with drinking water and food to atract magpies, crows etc is against the law? thought it was only using a tied down animal
