choosing a semi auto

i am thinking of buying a semi auto for pigeons and fowling on the marsh. but am unsure of what to go for. i generally shoot beretta [i have a 687 SP4, and a 686E] and so was tempted by an xtrema2, but i have heard good things about the baikal, which is almost half the price.

so, i am looking for advice on which i should opt for, or any alternatives.

cheers

I've had my eye on the Benelli Super Black Eagle and was hoping to get one at the CLA game fair but couldn't get a left hander without waiting upto 3 months.

I did however buy a Benelli Montefeltro semi. I'm absolutely chuffed with it. It shoots lovely looks far better than most other semis I've seen. I've shot pigeons every day with it and think its fantastic, I shoot it much better than I do my Beretta SP3.

The only downside is that it is a light gun and so the recoil is a bit stiff with magnum ammo.

But for clays and general rough shooting it is ideal. It is recoil operated as opposed to gas and so cleaning it is very quick and easy. The felt recoil on shooting is no more than shooting a gas operated gun, although everyone feels recoil differently.

Try mounting them and see the difference.

When I was looking for mine I tried the escort 3.5" magnum but found them a bit short in the stock.

Tried the Baikal and found it was like a tank gun, very heavy and unballanced with heavy muzzle.

Tried the Xtrema and thats what I bought, I have had it about 10 months now, but had a look at a couple of o/u 28" barrel 3.5" guns at the CLA and was tempted for a swap.

Problem with the 3.5" is that even with a 38" barrell it has a 3.5" ejection port plus place to slide the breech in to ect ect and its a very long gun. My 28" 3.5 is longer that my sons 303 30" barrelled 3" auto.

Go for the extrema 2 mate, beretta semi's are true quality. I know the baikal are half the price, but if your carrying it far you will realise why, its a lump of a gun and the finish isnt the best of jobs. On the other hand the beretta is true quality, from its action to the recoil its as smooth as they come!:D

May I recomend a Franchi 712 Raptor?

3 inch mag, reversible piston for light / heavy loads, weather coated wood making it look awesome, fast smooth cycling, nice looking nickel reciever, 3 chokes, key, spray oil, hard case, made by Beretta anyway........

If you shop round like I did, you'll get one for 575 brand new.

I'm very impressed with it so far, I'm shooting a lot better than I was before with a Miroku o/u.

The Remington 11-87 Super Mag is great gun, I have the SPS version. Can fire standard shells. 3" and 3.5".

Never had any problems with it and it's fired well over 8000 rounds.

Stick a turkey choke on it and with the correct load it is an brilliant fox gun upto 60 yards!!
