Trout for tea!

Well, I got up this morning at about 06:30 and could not believe my eyes - There was loads of large blue patches in the sky! Anyhow at about 08.00 just as I was wondering where I could go for a bit of crow bashing the phone rang. It was my step son asking to speak to his Mum to see if we were planning anything for today and if not was it OK for him to come and visit for the day. Naturally we said that even though we had not made plans we would have cancelled them for him to come as his father has very recently had a serious stroke. As it was he wanted to tell us that his Dad was making a good recovery and also that he (PJ - My step son) had been for a job interview as a carer for mantally and physically handicapped and was fairly sure that he had got the job!

PJ arrived at about 09:30 and we chatted about this that and the other till about 12:00 when I noticed that it was still dry and bright. Well, not to miss an oportunity I suggested that we should carry on chatting in the fresh air and sunshine so plans were made for me to go to Pennine Trout fishery for a couple of hours while Marlene and PJ sat on the fishery lawn and chatted. This was the first time I have fished a fly for well over 2 years so I was quite looking forward to it.

We eventually arrived at the fishery at about 14:00 and I booked in on a 2 hour 1 fish ticket. To say that I was fishing a fly was not really true as I was using an egg fly fished under an indicator - Not the most sporting of methods.

The fish were a bit slow as the water temperature was a bit high but eventually I found them at a depth of about 8 to 10 feet. To cut a long story short I landed 5 fish and lost 3 - One snapped me off and the other 2 threw the barbless hook!

The biggest I caught was around the five and a half pound mark but I put that back as all I wanted was one around two and a half pounds for Mine and Marlenes tea. The one I killed was exactly three pounds - See the first photo.

On getting home after a cuppa I set about filleting the fish and ended up with two rather nice large fillets. See the second photo. And guess what - I looked out of the kitchen window and it had started hissing down!

I cooked the fillets with lemon juice and sliced tomato and served them with new potatoes and garden peas. A meal fit for a king - Yum Yum! See the third photo.

All in all I had forgotten how much pleasure I got from fly fishing and this trip has got me on the point of thinking about buying a new fly rod, reel and set up including a fly tying kit!

I'm very envious of you Slamon fishing in Scotland mate!

Good looking dinner there Frenchieboy.

Salmon fishing in most Scotland at most times of the year is a bit like being a virgin and having your first sexual encounter with a condom on. Nothing like as good as you imagined... and you catch nothing.

Your filleting looks better then what i can do, but there is plenty of meat on these fish thats for sure..

Nice one frenchie im totally addicted to fly fishing at present

It's all down to having a good sharp knife and the fact that I am a right tight **** so I don't like wasting good food!

I used to fish the fly about twice a week some three or more years ago, only fishing with flies I tied myself! I believe that the real pleasure and satisfaction comes from catching on your own patterns!

Did you ever fish at Cerney Wick when you lived round 'ere?

Once or twice! My elder brother still fishes there now and then, he's from Coalpit Heath so it's not too far for him to travel but I think he is putting his spare time into sea fishing now that he has his own boat and caravan at Brixham.

My favourite trout fishery was Masterline Lechlade! I got my personal best Rainbow there - A 26 pound rainbow! My PB for a Brown Trout came from Pennine with a beautiful 12 pounder caught on a buzzer!
