These are the places i buy from. Mostly Helston then Martyn Elworthy. No reflection on the staff they are all friendly and helpfull (most of the time) any i have not mentioned is because i don't use or know of them.

Martyn Elworthy: Small shop limited stock expensive but some very nice guns.

Helston Gunsmiths: Lots of guns and kit good stocks of ammo and tanks outside, the cheapest for ammo for me.

Country Sports Centre: Never been to but have been told they are ok.

Cart ridge Shooting Ground: Small shop has some nice kit, you could maybe have around of clays.

Unfortunitly for a very rural place we have a shortage of Gunshops.

you could also try Ian Hodge Fieldsports near Wadebridge if your visiting Padstein at all - not a bad trip out.

i have been to IHFS before and it is on the small side, but they have plenty in there.

There is also an army surplus store in Wadebridge itself if you were there

What's Helston like for shotgun carts?

I buy mine from Helston, good selection at a fairly good price for Cornwall. i am sure you could find cheaper but down here we are limited. Worth going to anyway, they do a lot of work for police forces and the military around the world. Its not often you get 6 tanks parked out front of a gun shop.

I went out of my way to visit the gunshop at Helston when i holidayed down there earlier in the year as i had heard interesting things about it. I had my SGC with me and literrally cash in my pocket as had it in the mind to buy a cheap o/u or smallbore if there was anytrhing i took the fancy to.

Their shop is set out with the guns on racks on three walls of the shop with a 2 1/2 foot wide counter 2 1/2 foot in front of the racks. The assistant would not let me behind the counter to assess if there was anything I wanted a closer look at ! aparently i'm meant to be able to read a pricetag from 5 feet away?

Disgusted i left, money in pocket ! as far as im concerned Helkston Gunsmiths was the let down of the holiday

If you are visiting the southwest and want to see tanks- go to the tank museum !

Can't disagree with that. But I have bought a few guns from helston and have never had a problem handling the guns, I just ask to see whatever one takes my fancy.

As for the tank museum it's in Dorset long way from helston.

I guess that their method of questioning the customer for what he was after and making suggestions (and i assume possibly then showing the relevant guns ) is their method of "crowd control" Clearly i understand gunsmiths have to be careful how they let potential customers have access to the firearms being sold for reasomnns of both security and safety, but I was wanting to brouse what they had with an expectation of buying something if something caught my reye that was a good deal . Perhaps if they had a stcck/price list of what they had i could have then said can i please have a look at X , Y and Z but from 5 feet away how are tyou meant to read a pricetag and apraise a gun ?

Good point, don't think customer service is there strongest point. After sales with my rifle was very good though.

helstons pretty good,as already said ammo is cheap, cant say iv ever had any problems with them

i agree that its hard to see across the counter but if you say what your looking for i.e o/u for around £200 they will normaly pull out a good selection for ya,might of been who served you, only a couple of them are allowed to sell sgc/fac weapons and ammo so you could have gotten one of the others?

Ian Hodges havent got a massive amount of stock, I know they were talking about expanding the shop but dont know if thats happened yet.

The last time I went up he had about 50 ish guns/shotguns in various calibres. No issues with handling them and advice was freely given.

Ammo wise they've always got plenty in, I use winnies never out of stock, same as carts.

The shop is small but well stocked, like an aladdins cave really.

Not sure on prices, a box of winnies subs in .22lr is £4.50 which I think is about average, the staff are always happy to answer questions.

BTW I'm not affiliated to them, just like good customer service :good: :good:

Ian hodge has an open day in October according to the website so assume the new shop will be open from then.

Be good to have a little more space - but agree with the customer service - top notch. The lady called Ian up from the fields to have a word with me when I was looking at air rifles and shotguns
