Freelander

I have an 05 1.8 Petrol Freelander that's done 112k miles - it had a new engine at 72k under warranty by LR.

I've owned it for 3 1/2 years and "touch wood" it's been great :good:

I'm "pretty good" at offload driving & it has taken me where many wouldn't dare venture ;)

Its had a cracked exhaust manifold & a thermostat fail in the time I've owned it - so can't complaint.

I would never have bought 1 until I went out shooting a few times with a guy who had 1 - glad I gave it a go :good: :good:

Perhaps I was lucky ????????

I had a Millennium edition Freelander .Lovely car with all the toys. Then the head gasket went. Costly repair.6 months later same again. Then a strange grinding noise from underneath when on full lock . Ird on the way out. Got rid. I have never lost so much money on a car.

Heard a few different people say the petrol model freelanders go through head gaskets over the years, seen one at an offroad centre recently and every time it went up anything slightly steep all I could smell was clutch (no low box?). I use a swb 1.6 vitara and seen many standard vitaras do a lot better than them off road. cheaper to buy, fuel and insure too!

I had a freelander 1.8 2005 lovely motor full leather etc and yes surprisingly good off road, although no low gear box. My manifold went at 50k I think then at about 80 the head started to go and the dreaded vcu so she had to go...I would steer well clear mate ifi was you.....unless you have a pretty girl who works,at the garage you wouldn't mind ogling every 4 months :hmm:

My mate has a freelander and wouldn't be without it but it's like any landrover things will not work today then be fine tomorrow. IRD is a common failure as is the head gasket on the 1.8 but there is a cheap mod that moves/modifies the thermostat and pipe work and stops any problems, lotus used the same k series engine in the series 1 Elise and had no troubles at all.

Unless you've got loads of money to spend, and a very cheap local garage, and don't care if it ever works long enough to actually use it, run. Even if 'little money' is free.

They're awful off road, awful on road, they go through head gaskets, propshaft bearings, wheel bearings, tyres - hang on, I'll list the things that they don't wear out prematurly below:

Buy just about anything else, the Japs make reasonable motors, worth paying slightly more for.

K series engine should be avoided, they like to blow head gaskets

If you go freelander buy derv

I'm not a gaylander fan by any means but, if the K Series engine is repaired correctly, head gasket failure is the least of your worries when running a gaylander.

Im not a GAYLANDER fan but i have to admit i own and drive one. Head gasket was uprated with better bolts fitted before i bought it.Has been spot on uses water and oil but thats due to motorway miles and the nature of my driving.keep the oil and water-coolant toped up and its been spot on apart from the usual ABS,SRS HDC.PROP BEARINGS AND 2 GEARBOX MOUNTS.

Would i have a another one no or anthing else with a green oval badge.
