We have been up in Wester Ross for the last 2 weeks - weather was scortchio :good: The wind was favourable too - loads of Mackerel & Coalies, & some good Ling off Rhona Bank which we kept a couple & smoked them & gave some to the old lady that owns the accommodation - along with a large brown Crab which she loves :) We done a bit of traveling in the boat & went from Gairloch to Loch Ewe where we started off with Doggies & ended up with Cod. Whilst drifting over Rhona Bank we were circled with a small pod of Minkie Whales :good: looked like 2 adults with a young un in tow. I gave the local wildlife/whale watching boats a shout on the VHF to let them know where they were ;) share the love :D It was a little rough on the way back in as the wind had swung Northerly but I am confident in my capability at sea & what my boat can handle

One day we tried a bit further South & headed to Loch Torridon to see if any Barn Doors were home - I dropped anchor at 320 feet, dropped the 2 rods down with a whole Mackerel - swung the seats round & put our feet up. Lynelle (Hopper on here) done her usual & went to sleep  we normaly leave the baits for around an hour & bring them up one at a time to check - at about 45 minutes I told Lynelle to get her harness & but pad on, aye OK whatever B) was her reply, the reels not even started ticking yet (you usually get a few tick's when the fish hits the bait & a great big RRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR when it runs with it) I told her I wasn't kidding & to get geared up as I was about to slam the reel into gear & hit it ( I had been watching the rod tip) I set the hook & handed the rod over, (I had my harness on standby just in case but knew I wouldnt need it) about 30 minutes later the fish broke the surface :good: unhooked in the water, brought on board, quickly measured, tagged & pics taken & returned to the deep - going by the Old Charts 171lb Female.

Oh, she caught an ollypuss on the last day - first for us on the boat :yahoo:

Cracking skate, I am glad we dont have any down here, my back would never be the same again

Hiya, the south coast was once rife with Commons, but they were overfished many years ago, Weymouth was the centre of the fishing for them.... there is a train of thought tho that they are making a return ..:)

Have heard that claims of the od one being caught but never any proof

Yep, same as what i've heard...but, def not being discounted...they show up in the North Sea too, in trawls...and egg cases have been washed up on the far north coast of Scotland, where "they" think they have identified a breeding ground about a mile offshore...got one of those cases here in fact...so...hopefully looking good for the "Common"...:)

Norrie the Guy that started me fishing said that he had one off Largs in a small boat that would have been in the very early sixties /late fifties in those days there were at least a dozen clinker built fishing boats operating from the beach off of wee wooden jetties we fished there for Cod and Haddock Spurries etc I won my first club competition on one of those boats. I got one of those new fangled piza thingies from Nardinies as a prize that was about 1965.He said it towed the boat about they got it to the boat and cut the line as it was too big to bring in to a small boat I remember it was fought on a cut down greenheart salmon rod.
