aga man
i was invited for a night out lmping on saturday by a farmer on one of my permissions.basically i was the lamp man/ gundog with the promise of a few shots on the rifle. the farmer in question likes to shoot rabbits from the landrover with a cz 17 hmr. this was a bit new to me as i am used to the .22 and more recently the pcp for rabbits. we set off at 9.00pm around the stubbles and few cut grass fields, and soon started to shoot rabbits. although i am sill not totally convinced by the hmr i have to say the speed and accuracy of the 17 was impressive. after two hours we had bagged just short of fifty rabbits. the purpose of the outing was purerly a cull so therefore not all of the shots were sporting ones. the rabbits were to go to a pet/reptile food supplier so the condition of the carcases not too important. the shots were taken between 60 an 150 yds. there is 42 in the picture the others were a bit too smashed for a photo. sunday it was time for the pigeons. i had seen a wheat stubble during the week with birds on it, and i was praying that the farmer would not shift the bales in there by sunday as they were perfect for a hide. i noticed on this field that the stubble was quite long in places andf since pigeon controller on here had been shooting wheat stubbles [with his usual success] i asked if he had used cradles and floaters/bouncers. he kind enough to reply and said he had and basically told us how he had set up. we took the initiative to do simiilar [see pic] and the birds decoyed well for the first hour or so. unfortunately another stubble on the next farm had plenty of birds on it and as a result our action dryed up. we finished at 4. 30 pm with a modest bag of 32 with 2 ferals and 1 rook. we also shot a jackdaw but couldn't find it. not quite a pigeon controller bag but enjoyable all the same. with some satisfying high shots. thanks pc and thanks pw member Tan for joining me was a nice afternoon mate. simon6ppc
well done pal. ime thinking of a 17 hmr but like you say, if you want them for eating they smash em up a bit, unless you head shot em, but its not that easy all the time.... aga man
Don't think my wife would agree that you've had a productive weekend. Me on the other hand, a big well done yer i know what you mean. i too have a wife and three kids. she's been really good to me this weekend in letting me go. she will probably remember it though!. either that or she's after something well done pal. ime thinking of a 17 hmr but like you say, if you want them for eating they smash em up a bit, unless you head shot em, but its not that easy all the time.... if you have'nt tried the hmr and you get the chance try one fella. i was shocked at its performance. such a flat trajectory and very fast. still fond of the .22 rimmy for rabbits though Edited September 16, 2012 by aga man
