Catweazle
I used a backing of old vinyl flooring with wide commercial wallpaper offcuts pegged onto it. At a pinch you could use newspaper taped together with masking tape, strength isn't important if the have the vinyl to support it.

humperdingle
Floor lining paper, available from carpet shops or DIY sheds... It's about 4' wide and comes in a roll. Just shove a cane through the roll, and support it, then roll down as much as you need. Failing that, nip in to Asda or Tesco and ask if you can have the cardboard sheets that separates products like bog roll on the pallets... That's about 4'x3'.
