henry d
Come on guys & gals it`s nearly that time,do you make cider, would you like to give it a go? All you need is apples, something to crush them and a press.Even if you don`t have any trees at home the apples are easy to scrounge, just ask around and tell people you`ll clear up the wind-falls. njc110381
My boss makes cider every year. Being gardeners, it's easy to get loads of apples. We even get paid to pick them up and take them away! Usually, he gets around 30-40 gallons a year. Probably could make more if we had time. It's a great hobby, because once the barrel is started, it doesn't keep for long so you have to drink it (Honest!)
tiercel
Henry, What a good idea. Had a look on google and came up with this. Seems idiot proof to me so even I should be able to manage it.

Dave66
I,ve got my first gallon on the go at the moment, used a swing bin full of apple ( approx 25lbs ) put them through an electric juicer, and edded up with enough juice to start one gallon fermenting. Cant wait till it is ready, the plan was to use it for making Somerset chicken, might end up drinking it

Oh how I wish.............in the words of Mr.Punch....."That`s the way to do it!" HD, the other thing they make round here is plum "Jerkum". The surplus plums (big plum growing area round here) are treated the same way as the apples, "scratted", pressed and put in a barrel. The fermented results of this are devastating! If you freeze it, in small quantities, the water goes solid and the alcohol can be poured off. Well worth trying on cold frosty shoot days. Dunkield
FT, Cider wise, you can jump in your car and go the Monkey House (or is it Donkey House) from where you are Not sure about getting back though, last time we went, mrs stuartp had to come and pick us up :yp:

A few people seem to be going for the hydraulic car jack route and using net curtains for the "cheeses". FT - You wouldn`t need to drink much of that stuff,or is it for lighting fires :o

The cider is no longer brewed there though, it's bulmers. I will admit that it still has the desired effect and is one of the must see destinations for friends that come from away to stay with us (the Three Kings at Hanley Castle is another). There are several groups around here that make large quantities of the real stuff, and folks who will press your apples for you too. There used to be a cider manufacturer in Dumbleton called Lancebury's that was, I hazily remember, the best round here. There was the Plough at Elmley Castle which did brew its own lethal concotion, sadly it closed ten years ago. Although micro breweries have taken off in this area very few of them offer a cider. Shame!!!!!!!!!!! Ft FT - You wouldn`t need to drink much of that stuff,or is it for lighting fires :o Drinking is the norm HD!!! Just don't stand too close to a naked flame afterwards. Do you know that drinking a fair quantity of the freshly pressed apple juice is considered the finest cough cure known to mankind? Why?? Because you daren't!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Over nine hedges and splash the tenth!! Ft
