vbj
Thanks for all the advice on this post chaps. Regarding the Hull 3 Crowns, I wasn't quite accurate when I said that they'd discontinued the line, rather they've discontinued the 32g/5 combination and now don't go higher than 30g, which is a real pity as it's such a smooth shooting cartridge that it actually feels softer on the shoulder to me than their High Pheasant 30g's! I don't know where the likes of Purdey and H&H are going to get their 65mm super smooth 32g carts (that won't knock you over if you're shooting a light sbs) now, as I understand these were all repackaged 3 Crowns. The 30g 6 Grand Prixs still seem to throw the best patterns from my gun, but I just want that little bit of extra reach to cleanly kill the occasional high pheasant (very occasional sadly!) with the least possible additional recoil. A high quality 31g 5.5 cartridge would be perfect.... if only! I know William Powell do something like this but apparently they're still quite rough on the shoulder. Hello Mate, I use Eley GP 6/30 for pigeon and Express Supreme Game 5/32 for Pheasant. I find that the Express cartridges give about the same kick as the Eleys - might be worth buying a box and trying them? I shoot these through a Beretta S686 Sporter. The Express cartridges will cost a little more but they also do them in a 5/30. Hope that's of use, vbj

BrowningDJC
Another vote for Gamebore super game, they seem to give good kills and not punchy. Ive also shot saga exports and i rate those also.
kennett
I usually use rc s4, 30gm 6 which are a cracking cartridge, hard hitting and fast. Last time I shot I had to borrow some carts as had lost my sgc, a friend gave me 200 lyalvale supreme game, and I can honestly say they are the best I have ever used, a bit pricey but never wounded, and killing high birds stone dead. never got on with clear pigeon
CBL
A high quality 31g 5.5 cartridge would be perfect.... if only! I know William Powell do something like this but apparently they're still quite rough on the shoulder. I have used the "Blue Diamond" cartridges for a couple of seasons and think they are superb, and easy to shoot. On early season pheasant and for general rough shooting, they are spot on, although I would still think them a little on the heavyweight side for regular pigeon shooting. William Powell also do a 4.5 33g heavier load which again, for late season pheasant are also excellent, especially patterning through a 5/8 or 7/8 choking. anser2
If you took a dozen shooters to a pub, bought them a beer or two , you would get the same answers as you have had on here. Everyone has their own favoured cartridge \ load\ pellet size and yes in most cases they will all be right . Almost all modern cartridges of a given load will do the job you want it to to a reasonable range. I buy what ever is the cheapest shell i can get hold for pigeons and in the last few years must have used 20 brands of lead shells. They all did the job I asked of them.. In short almost all shells will kill pigeons at 40-45 yards as long as you play your part and place the shot in the right place. The main difference i have found between shells is not their killing power , but in recoil. Ps my comments apply to lead shells. The picture is a little different with steel shells with some makers still on a steep learning curve while others have acheved parity with lead for nornal range shots up to 40 yards.
