Darren north east
I've just picked up 2 guns from the police that belonged to a lad I know who's license was revoked. The Remington is covered in rust I've been trying to clean it up with gun oil and a rag with little success. Any sugestions please?
Andy H
Light oil and fine wire wool.
TrapFiller
Brillo pad worked for me
GingerCat
I removed light rust from an air rifle with powered chalk and 3 in 1 oil rubbed in gently, depends how rusted I guess. The chalk works a treat on little patches here and there, never did a whole barrel.
njc110381
Just how bad is it? I've dragged back some appalling things before by wrapping them in kitchen roll and soaking them in vinegar. It will have the finish right off though so unless it's damn near ruined it may be best to try a more gentle approach first!
Imperfection
Im sure someone on here a while back suggested rubbing tin foil and gun oil on the rusted surfaces.Never tried it myself though i must add.
njc110381
That makes sense as aluminium is more reactive than steel so would take the oxide. Whether that would happen in such a short time though I'm not sure?
Darren north east
Thanks for the ideas. If the finish is ruined does anyone know what paint to refinish it with back to matt black
Vince Green
Was it rusted when the police took them in?
Scully
As a lad I befriended an old boy who was a former custodian of the Crown Jewels in the Tower of London. He lived in a huge rambling house in town which was crammed to the rafters with armour, swords, bayonets, pikes, muskets, pistols and all manner of helmets from all over the world. He would give me 3 in 1 oil and the finest wire wool available whenever I called round to clean them.Blueing wasn't involved on any of the firearms so it wasn't an issue, but it certainly removed the rust. Darren north east
It was almost brand new no rust. They've told me to write to the chief constable bit I don't know if I can be bothered with that
