Jolly
Hi All was out last night with the hmr and I got a ricochet from one shot I thought hmr rounds disintegrated rather than ricocheted ? the shot was about 80 yds down hill into an empty valley perectly safe but still slightly concerned
flynny
Any bullet can ricochet mate, depending on angle fired and the angle/ object etc that it has hit, just cos it's fast and light don't mean it will never ricochet , any projectile can ricochet , Atb Flynny
bedwards1966
There isn't a round that cannot ricochet, no matter how lightweight and fast it is. The only difference is the chance of it happening is greatly reduced with some rounds, but never truly eliminated.
al4x
As said it can happen but the chances are far less than a .22lr the other issue is its a frangible round so may well have broken up and being light weight it looses energy fast
Whitebridges
What bullet were you using? You can get them with anything but the chances are reduced it you use ballistic tips.

rapid basher
There's a vid on YouTube of a ricochet with a 50cal He shot a target with a car tire as a back stop It came back and it him in the head! Don't now how he's still alive Edited January 11, 2013 by rapid basher
keeper1984
Horrible! Part of rifle shooting I'm afraid happened to us all
kent
What bullet were you using? You can get them with anything but the chances are reduced it you use ballistic tips. the plastic tip means nowt! jacket construction is key to expansion / fragmentation BUT the hmr is far from ricochet free. In deed under certain circumstances its worse than the .22 and carries more energy FYI - rushes the .17 seems to hate them!
houlsby
Hmr bounces like a bouncy thing. Nightmare over the summer when the ground was hard and on wet grass. I have a shoot bordering the m62 m18 junction and have started using the shotgun (lands cleared upto full bore as well! ) as I just can't be 100%. Redgum
We have all read the old 'Hmr's don't ricochet'. They are less likely to ricochet that the .22lr but if you have the correct backstop it should make no differance. I don't think ammo choice makes the slightest bit of differance, we should always carry out safe shooting practice with what ever we shoot. I have one piece of ground were I zero that has rolling hills for miles behind it, there is a steep hill 300yds behind the target area so the bullet does have the oportunity to ricochet, and it sure does. njc110381
When I had mine it used to send up the occasional bouncer. It wasn't common on my ground but it happened now and again. Generally I think the HMR throws up far less than the .22lr in average conditions and that makes it safer. Note though that I said safer rather than safe. A good backstop is important no matter what you're firing because you'll always get the odd one.
