I'll post this one to give you an idea as i have another which is better but it shows this Fox de-brushed as well because I wanted a keep sake as this kill was very sporting due to the slyness of this educated fellow ,Hence only a head shot was available

range 125yds

federal v- shok 55 grn Nosler .223

There is,nt enough flesh and bone to contain the energy of the bullet so it's something to be aware of if it is the only shot available ........not only that but at the time i thought what was left of the rear section of the bullet richoheted off somewhere as well :good:.........probably hit that rabbit

No kidding mark :good: .........There is no such thing as a non richocheting ballistic tipped bullet .......Anyone who thinks otherwise is ill informed ........like i said it might have been what was left of the boat tail anyway

Looks like it's been thrashed with a 9 iron Ive :lol:

The POA was right between the eyes and front on .

You'll do well to see one :good::lol:

I would 'ave agreed with you 100 % but having heard plenty of .22 LRs peowing all over the place this sounded very similar ........my initial thought was that the skull had delflected the round

This is a thread started in conjunctre with the ,223 zeroing thread explaining one of the reasons why head shots are the last option

Cheers,

I can see what you mean, just got confused with the fact that shooting a rabbit in the head with the .17hmr is the best way to kill them so believed it to be true with foxes aswell.

When i get a chance to take a shot at my illusive foxes ill choose a chest/boiler room shot with 55grn soft nose rounds.

Alex

:good:

P.s learnt alot last night aswell as today.

Pull up a sandbag whilst I swing the lamp...

In '88 I was on butt duty whilst LMGs were firing (7.62 Nato) from 600 m. Apparently an inexperienced operator mis set the sights and let rip with a long burst. The rounds hit the bank at the top of the butts in front of the target and went through the weak point at the 90 degree protection overhang, exited through the concrete, hit the target metal frame and lodged lightly in me left knee with just enough force to make me think I'd been kicked but it was actually lodged in my flesh. I literally plucked it out by hand and the "wound" was enough that it's still scarred to this day. :good:

Yawn, bore over. By the way I have seen and heard literally 100s of ricochets.

Well, here we go........ :good::lol::lol:

I have never had a 22-250, 223 0r 17 Rem ricochet, and have fired thousands of rounds over the years.

Now, I would hasten to add that I have never fired a fmj, which would ricochet. All my rounds have been soft point, hollow point or V Max type.

I have little doubt that bits of one of the above rounds could fly about on breaking up, but I would not term this to be a ricochet.

I would also add that I don't think that I have ever shot one of the above rounds further than 250 yards either, and that was with a dead safe backstop.

Comments please........

I have had .223 and .22/250 ricochets. Mostly with soft point bullets although i have had a couple of ricochets with ballistic tipped ammo. 1 with Hornady Vmax and a few with Noslers.

I don't load Nosler bullets anymore and one reason why is the amount of ricochets i heard whilst using them. Noslers have quite a thick base and it must be this that is ricocheting ??

Surely a ricochet doesn't have to be the complete bullet ricocheting ?

Stoney ground will obviously influence the bullets path and this is why i only ever use Hornady Vmax bullets. In my experience these bullets fragment extremely well thus reducing chance of ricochets. :good:

The first ricochet i ever heard was when i was zeroing my first .223 using 55 grain soft points at 200 yards with a safe backstop, the backstop was the banking at the local clay shooting ground (40 foot high banking at Lowes Lane shooting ground)

Now the ricochets that i have heard could of course just be stones that have been hit, Is that a possibility ?

Yes Mate, sorry to detract from the reason for the picture to begin with  . But seeing that clip of JFK being hit in the head sure looks like the fox also.

Switch your earing aid on you old ***

I'm almost certain I heard what was left of the fragmented bullet whizzing off into the distance so you have a point Don

In reality if your firing point is high like the roof of a landrover then the chances are slim but get out a 9-13" harris and there is a strong possibility if you miss and the ground is quite hard let's say  .......The point is the boiler room is the best place to take the shot where a fox is concerned whereby all the energy of a bullet is absorbed .
