Hamster
They have the highest suicide rate of any profession, I doubt that's because of the easy living. It's easy to think they're all loaded as many do drive expensive 4x4's and live the lifestyle we dream of but they're always at the mercy of the weather patterns and many are tenant farmers with small acreages where earning a living isn't easy. tubbiescooter
its not a easy job thats for sure a lot of farmers rent the land they farm with the current weather patterns a bit unpredictable they risk losing a lot of crops if fields flood, i don't think i could work 15-16 hour days that they do i have lot of respect for the miserable ****
Sean Richo
I understand I know a lad who is a farmer and he said what happens is sometimes they end up having lots of spare time while waiting for crops to go etc and if they don't keep busy some are known to drink which in lead turns into depression he thinks that what happens sometimes. He said it was more the older generations who done this. I know a lot of farmers three I know personally are all loaded and as we'll as owning farms own properties near to there farms all three are worth a million each if only in assets. Maybe it's just certain parts of the country but farmers in north west seem to be doing ok but it is mainly wheat they specialise in. 39TDS
There is a big difference between having a lot of assets and having money. There is also an even bigger difference between watching Countryfile and knowing something about farming.

No there isn't If you're sitting on assets worth a fortune but can't afford to feed yourself you're an idiot I bet there's a lot of farmworkers wouldn't mind swapping places with their bosses
Sean Richo
Not really a big difference between an asset and having money your assets are your money.
39TDS
So if your asset is a car or a gun for example, how do you spend that? If the answer is "sell it", then how do you get to work or go shooting? You can have a £10k car on your drive and still only have 2p in your pocket. JustJon
High fixed assets doesn't lead to a profitable business and therefore a rich farmer. Yes, many could well sell up but then where would our food bills be? Many feel a sense of tradition and pride in what they do and want to keep the assets on place got future generations, thank god. Diceman
There is a big difference between having a lot of assets and having money. There is also an even bigger difference between watching Countryfile and knowing something about farming. This. Feed protein costs per kg last year about 85p. Right now about £1.35. And since the £ tanked over the last couple of weeks it will get even more expensive. If you think meat is expensive now you aint seen nothing yet, but right now that difference is being swallowed by the farmers. And if you knew how many acres of planted rape were being ploughed up and abandoned because they didn't take, you would be horrified. And next years UK wheat crop will be tiny. And pork is barely worth raising at the moment because we are all complying with the new EU welfare regs and most of the rest of Europe can't be bothered. Yeah, farmers are doing really well at the moment.
RED BEARD
Then I'd sell it buy a 1k car and have 9k in my pocket . but if you've got £100,000 worth of tractors and implements its money invested to use to make a wage.same as if a farmer keeps selling land to make money, less land means less crops which means less profit.selling land/gear off is a road to ruin!
