Does anyone have a succinct and accurate statement of the roles and responsibilities of a shoot captain on non shoot day and shoot days ???

We all seem to have differing opinions and I have scanned the BASC code of good shooting practice and am now more confused than previously.

Any help gratefully received.

At the meeting point the Captain for the day should brief the Guns on the following:

General Info:

Wecome & introduce any guests

Number and order of drives and approx finish time

What may and may not be shot

Lunch break, where and when

If it is a walk 1 and stand one syndicate; is shooting in the beating line at birds going back permitted

Boundries and any limitations

Rubbish: Pick up empties

Pickers up. Who they are and where they will be positioned. What to do if you get a clipped bird or runner.

Organise the draw for pegs & state how many positions you move up after each drive.

You should ensure all Guns are insured through BASC or other organization.

Safety:

Signalling the start & finish of the drive. How ?

First aid. You should have a nominated first aider and a kit with one of the shoot vehicles and a mobile in case of a serious injury.

Carriage of guns. Open unless drive is in progress.

Gun safety - Let birds get up. No shooting down the line. Be aware beaters may be above you on some hilly drives.

Any boundry limitations, public rights of way. What must be done if you encounter walkers/ramblers.

This list is not exhaustive, and different shoots may well need to add or subtract certain points.

In short, you are responsible for the safe conduct, good sportsmanship and general running of the day. Lot of work with not much thanks; but thats the nature of the job !

On some shoots the shoot captain will ensure that the gamekeeper has the equipment he requires, the birds and feed have been purchased, cover crops are ordered and contractors know where crops are to go.

He/she must liaise with the owner to renew the lease, oversee health and safety on the shoot, organise the payments of beaters and pickers up, plan the drives with the keeper, host the shoot days, brief the guns and ensure that everyone is shooting safely and responsibly.

The responsibility and importance of the role should never be underestimated. When done well and in partnership with the gamekeeper the role of shoot captain can seem almost effortless with much of the work going unnoticed.

However, some shoot may choose to split out some of these roles so the shoot captain is in effect, the manager ‘on the day’ and does not take an active management roll on a day to day basis, this being left to others.

Consequently their activities on the day would probably be limited to the pre shoot talk and taking whatever action is needed should any gun transgress, and working with the keeper to determine the order of the drives, the positioning of the guns, stiops pickers up etc.

Ultimately there is no fixed set of ‘rules’ for a shoot captain, it all depend on the shoot, have a chat with the other guns at you next meeting.

Try to muckup the meeting place and time.

Run around like a headless chicken trying to organise teams, beaters, picker ups, stops, sweep etc while all the time this is being done with a minimum of fuss in the background by someone else.

Forget the order of drives,

Try to organise the beating line when in the gun line waiting to shoot.

Ignore the figures given by the game cart and picker ups and write down what you think was shot on the last drive.

Miscount the show of hands at lunch time so when you arrive at the pub afterwards there are too many or worse too few dinners.

Work yourself into a tizzy whereby you bite the head off someone quite innocent

Insist on towing the beaters or gun trailer with an unsuitable vehicle and waste valuable time whilst stuck up to your axles between drives

Announce the winner of the sweep while failing to notice a laden picker-up lumbering up the field following a sweep up after the last drive

Forget to thank the beaters.

And finally remember if there is a problem where there are two possible solutions, always take the one which it patently wrong and then blame someone else when it doesn't work
