i have been thinking about starting shooting long range as i like shooting longer range. I have been looking at ranges where i can get to without traveling half a day to get to that have the range length but was"t sure on cal. I like the sound of 50 bmg (big man gun) lol but i was thinking of somthing abit smaller.

i would not go for the 50bmg because its a dirty round (build for machine guns not for long range rifles.

there are more appropriate rounds available ie .338 lapua magnum and obviously .308

hope it helps

p.s am i the only one who thinks people with 50 cals are trying to over compensate for something :shifty:

I think you are still living in the 1950s - since we reload with Vit powders, (amongst others) using monolithic bullets - the round is no dirtier than your 223 rounds.

Compensate for something? - that would come from the enjoyment of engaging targets out to 3000yds as opposed to sitting on a forum bitching about those who can.............Jealousy springs to mind.

Whilst the , 408, 416 and 460 are great calibres, getting ammunition and or reloading components is like digging for gold.................

The 338LM is a good choice as ammunition and components are now readily available, alas no tracer though, for a field firing range you are really going to need tracer to confirm your point of aim in excess of a mile (1760yds)

And not Misurp tracer either, decent handloaded tracer with similar ballistic performance to the rounds you are loading. I put an awful lot of time and effort in to my 50bmg reloads to achieve consistency at extreme long range.

We are taking a team of 8-12 to the world championships in Raton 2014 and we intend to bring back some silverware.

Depends on which event you wish to shoot. 6.5 - 284 has done a lot of winning over the last decade however its not allowed in FTR class were .308 win is the obvious and near enough only choice. 260 rem and 6.5x47 lapua are pretty similar in performance - slightly behind the 284 but lasting longer. 30 cal magnums have won their fare share also the 7mm short magnums. The big military cals are really for anti material use out quite a bit further again and you don't want them banging you up or emptying you wallet with high ammo costs. A fast twist .243 AI held the 1000 yds benchrest record for quite a while in the UK Built and steered by Peter Jackson - but don't expect to get a few seasons use out of it! 6mm BR also works well but lacks the velocity so its a gun for the right day, though nobody can argue with what it has done at 1000 yds and up to 600 its still one of if not the most competitive ever

how come some of the mod ranges dont allow 338 ?

Its outside their muzzle energy limit. The MOD range near me despite going back 1200mtrs dont allow .338 so even soldiers have to go elseswhere to practice.

The furthest i've personally shot is 600mtrs...with open sights...with my old Lee Enfield and i can safely say a 4ft target becomes very small at that distance.
