The other day I was spending time chatting with a nieghbour, talking of course about guns etc, he told me he had permission on a small field nearby to shoot rabbits with an air rifle , but the farmer had about 100 acres in the next village which was ideal for pigeon shooting and suggested I call him and ask for permission,

I decided to go in person to ask, always prefer eye to eye, so yesterday I found his farm after a long search and pulled up in the yard, an old man came out of the barn and asked what I wanted, he seemed a bit 'off' so I was very friendly and explained how I had got his name , then just asked can I shoot pigeons on your farm,

To my amazement he just said yes, come anytime , shoot what you want, foxes rabbits pigeons hares pheasants partridge and rats, basically anything legal and in season.

I produced my licence and insurance along with a written permission form from BASC website, he was not interested in looking at the documents but happily signed my permission form, then went to great lengths to show me all his boundary lines plus explaining where two more fields could be found nearby which he also owned,

I ended up spending an hour with him just chatting about anything and everything, he is 72 , live on his own, bright as a button and likes good company,

I went over there this morning with all the gear, set up in a corner of a very muddy field that had been turnips until a few days ago, there is no rape on the farm but plenty of wheat, barley and grass, the pigeons came to the decoys without hesitation, it was very cold and the wind was getting stronger as the morning went on, I missed several easy shots but still dropped 5 before the cold got to me, cant wait till the warmer weather to put some time in there, the fields were alive with cock pheasants and partridge which were feeding right in front of me and seemed to ignore the noise as I fired at the pigeons, then just as I was packing away a huge dog fox crossed the field about 100 yards from me, just ignored me, I dont think anyone has been on these fields with a gun for some time, looking foward to the next visit, the farmer is sewing barley next week so I will be there ,

Why on earth would you want to go and put yourself to the trouble of actually going to knock on a farmers door for permission?

Surely all you had to do was ask for land to shoot on right here on PW and sit back for the farmers to contact you!

On a more serious note, well done on the permission. You earned it.
